The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated on two rqjresentative NDT techniques intapretation of data acquired with an ultrasonic rail inspection system and interpretation of eddy-current data from heat exchangers in (petro-)chemical industry. A recent trend in particle analysis has been the introduction of personal computer-based automation (3). Sophisticated software packages can be used to automate and speed up the analysis. Bosch and co-workers devised laboratory reactors to operate at high pressure and temperature in a recycle mode. These test reactors had the essential characteristics of potential industrial reactors and were used by Mittasch and co-workers to screen some 20,000 samples as candidate catalysts. The results led to the identification of an iron-containing mineral that is similar to today s industrial catalysts. The researchers recognized the need for porous catalytic materials and materials with more than one component, today identified as the support, the catalyticaHy active component, and the promoter. On-Hne Procedures The growing trend toward automation in industry has resiilted in many studies of rapid procedures for generating size information so that feedback loops can be instituted as an integral part of a process. Many of these techniques are modifications of more traditional methods. The problems associated with on-line methods include allocation and preparation of a representative sample analysis of the sample evaluation of the results. The mean residence time T (defined as H JF) is the most important parameter, since it determines the time over which particles are exposed to grinding. Measurements on several industrial mills (Weller, Automation in Mining Mineral and Metal Processing, 3d IFAC Symposium, 303-309, 1980) (measured on the water, not the ore) showed that the maximum mill filhng was about 40 percent, and the maximum flow velocity through the mill is 40 m/h. [Pg.1851]

Robotics The introduction of robotics has given a new dimension to packaging in that it is now possible to do repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy at notably lower cost than if done by people. The manufacture of robots is well established with corporations of substantial resources providing a quality product with continuity of service, supply, and software support. There is also a specialty industry which is available to supply both accessory hardware and software which are custom designed to handle specific user situations. Economic analysis needs to be done before making the decision as to whether to automate using robots, fixed automation, or the labor of people aided by work aids. [Pg.1972]

Bioprocess Control An industrial fermenter is a fairly sophisticated device with control of temperature, aeration rate, and perhaps pH, concentration of dissolved oxygen, or some nutrient concentration. There has been a strong trend to automated data collection and analysis. Analog control is stiU very common, but when a computer is available for on-line data collec tion, it makes sense to use it for control as well. More elaborate measurements are performed with research bioreactors, but each new electrode or assay adds more work, additional costs, and potential headaches. Most of the functional relationships in biotechnology are nonlinear, but this may not hinder control when bioprocess operate over a narrow range of conditions. Furthermore, process control is far advanced beyond the days when the main tools for designing control systems were intended for linear systems. [Pg.2148]

The crystallization kinetics defines the open time of the bond. For automated industrial processes, a fast crystallizing backbone, such as hexamethylene adipate, is often highly desirable. Once the bond line cools, crystallization can occur in less than 2 min. Thus, minimal time is needed to hold or clamp the substrates until fixturing strength is achieved. For specialty or non-automated processes, the PUD backbone might be based on a polyester polyol with slow crystallization kinetics. This gives the adhesive end user additional open time, after the adhesive has been activated, in which to make the bond. The crystallization kinetics for various waterborne dispersions were determined by Dormish and Witowski by following the Shore hardness. Open times of up to 40 min were measured [60]. [Pg.791]

Benson and Ponton (1993) and Ponton (1996) have speculated on the ultimate results of continuing efforts for process minimization. They envision a twenty-first century chemical industry totally revolutionized by technological innovation, automation, and miniaturization. Small, distributed manufacturing facilities would produce materials on demand, at the location where they are needed. Raw materials would be nonhazardous, and the manufacturing processes would be waste free and inherently safe.
