Particle Size Laser Refractometiy is based upon Mie scattering of particles in a liquid medium. Up until about 1985, the power of computers supplied with laser diffraction instruments was not sufficient to utilize the rigorous solution for homogeneous spherical particles formulated by Gustave Mie in 1908. Laser particle instrument manufacturers therefore used approximations conceived by Fraunhofer. 

Experiments were performed on an automated parallel synthesis workstation coupled with a personal computer supplied with software enabling the workstation to be programmed. Samples were prepared in a rack containing a 6x4 array of glass tubes. Catalytic activities were measured by means of gas chromatography. The reported activities are the averages of the results from different experiments. 

Computer Simulation The empirical thermal profiles were simulated using a Model 9236 computer supplied by Hewlett Packard, Palo Alto, California.

We distinguish between digitu.1 [246] and analog computers [247] and the combination of the two in hybrid computational systems [248]. The digital computer supplies the data in tables of figures whereas the analog machine represents the results as time-dependent voltages which may be recorded in various forms. It would lead us too far to go into details here the reader is referred to books on the subject [248, 2491. 

There are two approaches to eliminating these errors. The first approach is to use a flow computer supplied with a continuous measurement of calorific value and gravity. The errors are eliminated because all measurements are continuous and instantaneous. No averages are used and the energy flow itself is the only quantity integrated over the measurement period. In the second approach the energy flow is measured directly by the instrument so that the need of calculating it from other measured quantities is eliminated.

To avoid this, a clean supply is required for the computer network. Tfiis can be provided by taking the ring or radial circuits for the computer supplies from a point as close as possible to the intake position of the electrical supply to the building. A clean earth can also be taken from this point, which is usually one core of the cable and not the armour of an SWA cable, and distributed around the final wiring circuit. Alternatively, the computer supply can be cleaned by means of a filter such as that shown in Fig. 3.70.
