Gas handling equipment

Gas handling equipment is used to transfer materials through pipe lines, during which just enough pressure or head is generated to overcome line friction, or to raise or lower the pressure to some required operating level in connected process equipment. The main classes of this kind of equipment are illustrated in Figures 7.18 and 7.19 and are described as follows. [Pg.143]

Like alkene double bonds, carbonyl double bonds can be reduced by catalytic hydrogenation. Catalytic hydrogenation is slower with carbonyl groups than with olefinic double bonds, however. Before sodium borohydride was available, catalytic hydrogenation was often used to reduce aldehydes and ketones, but any olefinic double bonds were reduced as well. In the laboratory, we prefer sodium borohydride over catalytic reduction because it reduces ketones and aldehydes faster than olefins, and no gas-handling equipment is required. Catalytic hydrogenation is still widely used in industry, however, because H2 is much cheaper than NaBH4, and pressure equipment is more readily available there. [Pg.863]

An important advance in NO inhalation therapy would be to develop an ambulatory treatment regime that allows the patient to leave the hospital and resume normal activities without being bmdened by cumbersome gas handling equipment. A feature of the early problems of both Tsumeb and Metaleurop was the high downtime of the gas handling equipment.
