Gas handling equipment

Gas handling equipment is used to transfer materials through pipe lines, during which just enough pressure or head is generated to overcome line friction, or to raise or lower the pressure to some required operating level in connected process equipment. The main classes of this kind of equipment are illustrated in Figures 7.18 and 7.19 and are described as follows. 

Like alkene double bonds, carbonyl double bonds can be reduced by catalytic hydrogenation. Catalytic hydrogenation is slower with carbonyl groups than with olefinic double bonds, however. Before sodium borohydride was available, catalytic hydrogenation was often used to reduce aldehydes and ketones, but any olefinic double bonds were reduced as well. In the laboratory, we prefer sodium borohydride over catalytic reduction because it reduces ketones and aldehydes faster than olefins, and no gas-handling equipment is required. Catalytic hydrogenation is still widely used in industry, however, because H2 is much cheaper than NaBH4, and pressure equipment is more readily available there.

An important advance in NO inhalation therapy would be to develop an ambulatory treatment regime that allows the patient to leave the hospital and resume normal activities without being bmdened by cumbersome gas handling equipment. With this in mind, Hampl et al. tested the ability of periodically administered DETA/NO (Figure 2) to relieve pulmonary hypertension in rats whose lungs had been injured by monocrotaline exposure (20). They found that once-a-day inhalation of aerosolized DETA/NO lowered these animals PAP to normal levels with no observed effect on overall blood pressure (i.e., mean systemic arterial pressure, or MAP) or other signs of toxicity.

A feature of the early problems of both Tsumeb and Metaleurop was the high downtime of the gas handling equipment. This contributed significantly to plant downtime, in the case of Tsumeb, centering on the operation of an evaporative gas cooler and in the case of Metaleurop, a Fluxflow waste heat boiler. In both cases, the process equipment selection occurred directly between the client and supplier without a formal review step by Ausmelt. This review has now been incorporated into Ausmelt s procedures for future projects, with a view to provide a benefit to both the client and technology supplier. 

When an expanded production is considered, we have to treat more concentrate in the roasters. This leads to the generation of more process gas. From the view point of acid production capacity, the bottle necks were 1) insufficient capacity of the gas handling equipment, such as the air blowers, waste gas fans and gas blowers in the roasting process, 2) imbalance of heat in the roaster caused by increasing feed. 

When both the original and substitute fuels have the same Wobbe index no major change in gas handling equipment and piping is necessary. 

Loose leather gloves should be worn when handling fluorine cylinders and when operating fluorine gas-handling equipment. Leather gloves provide optimum protection against potential fluorine-fed fires. Care...
