The elements of an SMS have strong interactions with one another. It is not possible to meet the requirements of one of the elements without considering its effect on the others. [Pg.31]

The interconnectedness of the elements can be illustrated by considering the development of an Emergency Response Plan, in which the following sequence of actions, involving seven of the elements of SEMS, may occur  [Pg.31]

Operational Deviation Safely Deviation Emergency Operation Emergency Response [Pg.32]

The operation stays within the safe iimits. Some operating parameters move outside their safe limits, but not at the emergency level. Time is not of the essence. The emergency limits are exceeded emergency operations and/or automated instmment response are required. The emergency has spread to other units. [Pg.32]

The consequences of the problem are primarily economic, although failure to address the situation may eventually lead to a safety problem. The consequences resulting from the deviation are that worker safety is Jeopardized and/or a major environmental problem may result. The deviation is very serious. There is an immediate danger of a fatality or of a major environmental release. The situation has deteriorated such that an entire lacility is threatened, not just one operating unit. The public may also be affected. [Pg.32]

WHIM descriptors Weighted Holistic Invariant Molecular descriptors) are discussed in detail in the Handbook, Chapter XIII, Section 2 [48, 49]. [Pg.428]

The holistic thermodynamic approach based on material (charge, concentration and electron) balances is a firm and valuable tool for a choice of the best a priori conditions of chemical analyses performed in electrolytic systems. Such an approach has been already presented in a series of papers issued in recent years, see [1-4] and references cited therein. In this communication, the approach will be exemplified with electrolytic systems, with special emphasis put on the complex systems where all particular types (acid-base, redox, complexation and precipitation) of chemical equilibria occur in parallel and/or sequentially. All attainable physicochemical knowledge can be involved in calculations and none simplifying assumptions are needed. All analytical prescriptions can be followed. The approach enables all possible (from thermodynamic viewpoint) reactions to be included and all effects resulting from activation barrier(s) and incomplete set of equilibrium data presumed can be tested. The problems involved are presented on some examples of analytical systems considered lately, concerning potentiometric titrations in complex titrand + titrant systems. All calculations were done with use of iterative computer programs MATLAB and DELPHI. [Pg.28]

How do you then design an effective system There are several techniques you can use. Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Theory of Constraints (TOC) are but three. The FMEA is a bottom-up approach, the FTA a top-down approach, and TOC a holistic approach. [Pg.182]

Ecological planning in this context will help to avoid ecological disasters (e.g. excessive weed growth in stored water) and maximize the life span of the benefits derived from the development. It will be clear that this holistic approach to development has economic as well as ecological advantages. [Pg.39]

Reductionist World-View Holistic World-View a shift away from a long held belief that complex self-organized behavior requires a complex underlying dynamics and/or substructure towards the new notion that complexity is an emer-gent/holistic phenomenon that often arises from the interactions among a large assemblage of otherwise simple parts i.e. the properties of the parts must be understood as a dynamics of whole. [Pg.608]

Fourth, I would like to extend a particularly deep thanks to my fellow traveler, Lyntis Bem d, who shares my strange predilection for weaving holistic patterns out of what most of the (Western) world sees simply as arbitrarily partitioned things. Lyntis calm presence continues to make my intellectual journey a much happier, and a far less lonely, one. I cherish your always kind and gentle wisdom. [Pg.830]

A holistic treatment of the main medical disciplines. The basic sciences including most of the achievements in cell and molecular biology have been blended with pathology and clinical medicine. Thus, a special feature is that departmental barriers have been overcome. [Pg.498]

Any effort to integrate the findings of partial global environmental system studies into a comprehensive holistic view requires ... [Pg.9]

Over the last decade our view of chemistry has evolved substantially. Whereas individual researchers previously focused on specific areas of chemistry, such as inorganic, organic, etc. we now take a more holistic approach. Effective and efficient research projects now incorporate whatever aspects of the chemistry subdisciplines that are needed to complete the intended work. [Pg.178]

Something we feel very strongly about is that we can have multiple mentors in our lives. Different mentors can provide different gifts. For example, you might have a mentor to help you in your profession, another who stimulates your creativity, another who can teach you to be a better listener, and another who shows you how to be a better volunteer. Mentors can tap different facets of our lives, fostering holistic growth. [Pg.46]

I have tried to make it clear that the LC-MS combination is usually more powerful that either of the individual techniques in isolation and that a holistic approach must be taken to the development of methodologies to provide data from which the required analytical information may be obtained. Data analysis is of crucial importance in this respect and for this reason the computer processing of LC-MS data is considered in some detail in both Chapters 3 and 5. [Pg.11]

Does the LON Teaching Approach Contribute to Students More Holistic Understanding of the Content Chemical Reactions ... [Pg.321]

In the final discussion of the LON team about the implemented teaching approach, teachers were of the common opinion that students understanding of chemical reactions gained through the LON approach was more holistic than they had experienced during previous years. [Pg.321]

In this introductory chapter, a broad overview is given of the history of chemical warfare on earth, and the compounds, species, and mechanisms involved. The impact of human-made compounds on the environment, which is the subject of this book, is an extremely recent event in evolutionary terms. It is important to take a holistic view, and to see the effects of human-made pollutants on the environment against the background of chemical warfare in nature. [Pg.15]

Because of their wide-ranging and holistic character, assays of behavioral effects have been used as screening procedures when testing for neurotoxicity (see, for example, Iversen 1991, Tilson 1993). They can provide sensitive indications of neurotoxic disturbances, which can then be traced back to their ultimate cause by using mechanistic biomarker assays. [Pg.310]

Integrationism, on the other hand, unites those who pride themselves for their holistic view of the complete system, without necessarily being burdened by a detailed understanding of structure and function of the minute components that make it work. The up-in-the-air perspective. [Pg.130]

Rice bran is a storehouse of unique bioactive compounds. The human body is a remarkable self-regenerating system. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, wrote that Disease does not occur unexpectedly. It is the result of constant violation of nature s laws. Accumulation of such violations results in diseases . The possible involvement of all the bioactives of rice bran indicates a holistic approach to helping the body to regenerate to a normal state from a disease state. Holistic or alternative medicine does not treat or cure a disease but fights symptoms, makes the body handle the challenges... [Pg.348]
