Ecological Disasters

Ecological planning in this context will help to avoid ecological disasters (e.g. excessive weed growth in stored water) and maximize the life span of the benefits derived from the development. It will be clear that this holistic approach to development has economic as well as ecological advantages. 

Climate change has become a burning issue, but given the way some environmentalists and others exploit it, and the inaccurate record of past predictions of ecological disaster, skepticism is still a reasonable position. The hyping of the issue may even have begun to backfire on environmentalists. 

Case History 3 Fire Turns into an Ecological Disaster... 

The introduction of chemicals into the environment is considerable. Large amounts of organic compounds are released into the environment every year by industrial and agricultural processes, traffic, urban waste disposal and ecological disasters. Once present in the environment, they are subjected on the one hand to transport processes in air, water and soil and, on the other hand, they are subjected to the influence of the reactor environment , i.e. transformation products may be formed by chemical, photochemical and microbiological transformation processes. Chemical reactions with other pollutants present in the environment can also take place. As a result of these processes, a variety of new and unexpected compounds can be formed from the originally released pollutants and, as a rule, they are more polar than the parent compounds.

UV-C Ultraviolet radiation in the range of about 40 to 290 nm wavelengths. Almost all UV-C is filtered out by our atmosphere. Because DNA and proteins absorb radiation in this range, UV-C could cause crop damage and general ecological disaster if it were to reach the earth s surface in significant quantities. 

The tanker Baia Paraiso with one thousand tons of diesel oil on board sank at the coast of the Antarctic continent in January of 1989. Another tragedy happened in the Arctic waters of Alaska two months later. The tanker Exxon Valdez sank at the reef because of the fault of the captain. More than 40 thousand tons of petroleum flowed out from the hole into the waters. A petroleum slick covering an area up to 800 km2 was formed. The area in the Strait of Prince William was declared "a zone of disaster". The US Navy was involved with the cleanup. Nevertheless, there was the "potential for ecological disaster" with consequences that are difficult to foresee, according to the Washington Post. 

The source of the pollution of the hydrosphere by constituents of the oil are of different origin. They begin at the site of petroleum exploitation itself (on land as well as in the sea), then during transport, when the water of oceans is polluted by fairly frequent breakdowns and occasional ship-wrecks. For example, in the wreck of the oil-tanker Torrey Canyon in 1967, 118,000 t of oil was spread on the surface of the English Channel. Within this ecological disaster 25,000 sea birds died. The use of cleaning preparations turned out to be even more harmful for the sea life than the... 

Ideality is basically a qualitative measure and is used to compare the benefits and harm caused by the introduction of a given system. For example, when a gas pipeline in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, the United States is considered, its Fu can be interpreted as the increased energy independence of the country, the increased chemical production, the additional income for the locals, and so on. On the other hand, Fh may be interpreted as lost valuable agricultural land, harm to the unique views, potential ecological disaster in the case of an explosion and fire, and so on. Such a comparison has purely qualitative nature. However, even in this example, it is entirely possible to assign to all these functions monetary or utility values, and the ideality of a system will be expressed in purely quantitative terms. 

The Baltic Sea s protection started in 1992 in Helsinki when an international convention on this subject was signed. More than 150 pollution sources are listed in this convention s protocols. But even the fullest realisation of the convention will not prevent the ecological disaster if the dumped weapons are not safely isolated.
