Ethical issues and randomisation There are ethical issues with randomisation. There are two t)rpes of ethics which are associated with human, medical research - individual and collective ethics. Individual ethics recognises the primacy of the individual and is aimed at doing what is best for the subjects in the current trial. In contrast, collective ethics is aimed at doing what is best for all future patients who will benefit from the results of the current trial. Clearly, there is a tension between these two principles that is recognised in the declaration of Helsinki, which comes down on the side of the individual ... [Pg.296]

The safety of the subjects enrolled in the trial is always the primary concern of the researcher. Individuals at high or unknown risk to treatment with the drug are excluded from the study. For example, women of child bearing potential are usually excluded or required to use an acceptable method of birth control. Personal control has been one of the most researched individual difference dimensions in psychology. Since Rotter developed the first measure of this construct in 1966, more than 2000 studies have investigated the relationship between perceptions of personal control and other variables (Hunt, 1993). Internals are more achievement-oriented and health conscious than externals. They are less prone to distress and more likely to seek medical treatment when they need it (Nowicki and Strickland, 1973 Strickland, 1989). Quantum mechanics (QM) is the correct mathematical description of the behavior of electrons and thus of chemistry. In theory, QM can predict any property of an individual atom or molecule exactly. In practice, the QM equations have only been solved exactly for one electron systems. A myriad collection of methods has been developed for approximating the solution for multiple electron systems.
