Manufacture. The manufacture of sulfur dichloride is similar to that of sulfur monochloride, except that the last stage of chlorination proceeds slowly and must be conducted at temperatures below 40°C. The preparation of a high assay sulfur dichloride requites special techniques, eg, continuous chlorination duriag distillation or distillation with traces of phosphoms trichloride or phosphoms pentasulfide [1314-80-3] (162—164). Cmde product containing 80 wt % sulfur dichloride to which is added 0.1 wt % phosphoms trichloride can be distilled to yield a 98—99 wt % pure sulfur dichloride, which can be stored for weeks at room temperature without appreciable change. [Pg.139]

Calcium Hypochlorite. High assay calcium hypochlorite [7778-54-3] was first commercialized in the United States in 1928 by Mathieson Alkali Works, Inc. (now Olin Corp.) under the trade name HTH. It is now produced by two additional manufacturers in North America (Table 5). Historically, it usually contained about 1% water and 70—74% av CI2, so-called anhydrous product, but in 1970, a hydrated product was introduced (234). It is similar in composition to anhydrous Ca(OCl)2 except for its higher water content of about 6—12% and a slightly lower available chlorine content. This product has improved resistance to accidental initiation of self-sustained decomposition by a Ht match, a Ht cigarette, or a small amount of organic contamination. U.S. production in the 1990s consists primarily of partially hydrated Ca(OCl)2, which is sold as a 65% av CI2 product mainly for swimming pool use. Calcium hypochlorite is also sold as a 50% av CI2 product as a sanitizer used by dairy and food industries and in the home, and as a 32% product for mildew control. [Pg.473]

Appropriate system suitability is very important for CE assays in a QC environment. It is preferable to define CE-specific system suitability criteria rather than directly adopt system suitability based on HPLC methods. Earlier data from biotech companies showed a high assay failure rate due to inappropriate system suitability criteria. In terms of overall efficiency, chemical precipitation of the bound fraction with ammonium sulfate or polyethylene glycol is often less satisfactory than systems such as second antibody. In particular, they tend to yield high assay blank values. However, for many routine assays this defect is compensated by their high level of practicality. [Pg.283]
