Dimethylaminopyridine [1122-58-3] (DMAP) (24) has emerged as the preferred catalyst for a variety of synthetic transformations under mild conditions, particularly acylations, alkylations, silylations, esterifications, polymeri2ations, and rearrangements (100). POLYDMAP resin [1122-58-3], a polymeric version of DMAP, is available, and is as effective as DMAP as a catalyst for acylation reactions. A native of Long Island, New York, Timothy P. Meagher received his B.A. from SUNY Potsdam, Potsdam, New York, in 1981. Following a brief stint in industry, he earned his Ph.D. at Ohio State University in 1988. He joined the research department at Reilly Industries, Inc. in 1988. During his tenure there he worked in the area of pyridine chemistry. In particular, projects involved gas phase synthesis, ammoxidation, chlorination, and hydrogenation of pyridine compounds. Publications include contribution to Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds II and a patent on hydrogenation of 2-ethanol pyridine. Colin H. McAteer was born in London, UK, and obtained B.Sc. (Hons) and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Warwick. His ongoing research interests include the catalyzed synthesis of pyridine bases and their alkenyl and cyano derivatives, as well as the use of isotope substitution to investigate the mechanism of catalyzed processes.
