Acrylates are primarily used to prepare emulsion and solution polymers. The emulsion polymerization process provides high yields of polymers in a form suitable for a variety of appHcations. Acrylate polymer emulsions were first used as coatings for leather in the eady 1930s and have found wide utiHty as coatings, finishes, and binders for leather, textiles, and paper. Acrylate emulsions are used in the preparation of both interior and exterior paints, door poHshes, and adhesives. Solution polymers of acrylates, frequentiy with minor concentrations of other monomers, are employed in the preparation of industrial coatings. Polymers of acryHc acid can be used as superabsorbents in disposable diapers, as well as in formulation of superior, reduced-phosphate-level detergents. [Pg.148]

Early phenoHc resins consisted of self-curing, resole-type products made with excess formaldehyde, and novolaks, which are thermoplastic in nature and require a hardener. The early products produced by General BakeHte were used in molded parts, insulating varnishes, laminated sheets, and industrial coatings. These areas stiH remain important appHcations, but have been joined by numerous others such as wood bonding, fiber bonding, and plywood adhesives. The number of producers in the 1990s is approximately 20 in the United States and over 60 worldwide. [Pg.292]

There is not enough space here to give a detailed classification, but only to delineate the major families from which resins for industrial coatings may be selected. Resins may be divided into two groups according to their modes of film formation which may or may not involve a chemical reaction. In the first, the components must react together to form a crosslinked structure which may require heat, radiation or catalysis to effect the reaction. MUF resin is widely used as an adhesive in wood industries, coating technology, paper industries and a main material in kitchenware production. In various applications, different resin properties are needed to suit its application. Other polymeric binders, natural and synthetic, may be found as paints or varnishes in modern artworks and installations. Artists very easily adopt resins developed as industrial coatings or for specialized applications, and use them according to their creative needs. Natural rubber latex is a water dispersion of 1,4-ds-polyisoprene particles where pigments can be added to give coloured paints. By means of Py-GC/MS the presence of these paints can be easily assessed.
