Federal regulations (40 CFR 261) classify acrylonitrile as a hazardous waste and it is Hsted as Hazardous Waste Number U009. Disposal must be in accordance with federal (40 CFR 262, 263, 264), state, and local regulations only at properly permitted faciUties. It is Hsted as a toxic pollutant (40 CFR 122.21) and introduction into process streams, storm water, or waste water systems is in violation of federal law. Strict guidelines exist for clean-up and notification of leaks and spills. Federal notification regulations require that spills or leaks in excess of 100 lb (45.5 kg) be reported to the National Response Center. Substantial criminal and civil penalties can result from failure to report such discharges into the environment. [Pg.185]

Thorium, uranium, and plutonium are well known for their role as the basic fuels (or sources of fuel) for the release of nuclear energy (5). The importance of the remainder of the actinide group Hes at present, for the most part, in the realm of pure research, but a number of practical appHcations are also known (6). The actinides present a storage-life problem in nuclear waste disposal and consideration is being given to separation methods for their recovery prior to disposal (see Waste treati nt, hazardous waste Nuclear reactors, waste managet nt). [Pg.212]

Exposure limits for siHcon carbide and powders of zirconium compounds (including zirconium dioxide) have been estabHshed by ACGIH. TLV—TWA s are 10 mg/m and 5 mg/m, respectively. OSHA guidelines for zirconium compounds call for a PEL of 5 mg/m. There are no exposure limits for siHcon nitride powder, but pmdent practice suggests a TLV—TWA of 0.1 mg/m. The soHd ceramics present no apparent health hazard. In machining such ceramics, however, care should be taken to prevent inhalation of respirable particles in amounts in excess of estabHshed limits. Solution Casting. The production of unsupported film and sheet by solution casting has generally passed from favor and is used only for special polymers not amenable to melt processes. The use of solvents was generally very hazardous because of their flammabiUty or toxic nature. The cost of recovery and disposal of solvents became prohibitive for many lower price film appHcations. The nature of the drying operations leads to problems with solvent migration and retention that are not problems with melt-processed polymers. [Pg.381]

Economic Considerations. The principal economic consideration is, of course, total installed system cost, including the initial cost of the flow primary, flow secondary, and related ancillary equipment as well as material and labor required for installation. Other typical considerations are operating costs and the requirements for scheduled maintenance. California and Minnesota have placed restrictions on the disposal of fluorescent light tubes, which contain from 40—50 mg of mercury per tube, depending on size. After batteries, fluorescent lamps are the second largest contributor of mercury in soHd waste streams in the United States (3,14). A California law classifies the disposal of 25 or more fluorescent lamp tubes as hazardous waste. In Minnesota, all waste lamps generated from commercial sources are considered hazardous waste. Private homes are, however, exempt from the law (14). Other states have proposed similar regulations. Several companies have developed technologies for recovering mercury from spent lamps (14). [Pg.108]

Environmental Factors. The control, recovery, and disposal of mercury-bearing waste products are as important to the mercurials industry as the manufacturing process. The difficulties involved in removing mercury from waste-product streams and the problems of recovery or disposal have resulted in a substantial reduction in the number of manufacturers of mercury compounds as well as in the variety of mercury compounds being manufactured. Moreover, the manufacturing process used for a mercury compound may not necessarily be the most efficient or economical. Rather, the choice may depend on the nature of the by-products, the toxic hazard of the process, and the ease of recovery of the mercury from the waste-product stream. [Pg.116]

Low molecular weight ether hydroperoxides are similarly dangerous and therefore ethers should be tested for peroxides and any peroxidic products removed from them before ethers are distilled or evaporated to dryness. Many ethers autoxidize so readily that peroxidic compounds form at dangerous levels when stored in containers that are not airtight (133). Used ether containers should be handled cautiously and if they are found to contain hazardous soHd ether peroxides, bomb-squad assisted disposal may be required (134). Wastes contaminated with aniline may be Hsted as RCRA Hazardous Waste, and if disposal is necessary, the waste disposal methods used must comply with U.S. federal, state, and local water poUution regulations. The aniline content of wastes containing high concentrations of aniline can be recovered by conventional distillation. Biological disposal of dilute aqueous aniline waste streams is feasible if the bacteria are acclimated to aniline. Aniline has a 5-day BOD of 1.89 g of oxygen per gram of aniline. [Pg.232]
