Hazardous work

This section describes the precautions necessary with certain types of hazardous work. It covers entry into confined spaces, lockout and tagging of equip- [Pg.222]

Work zones are designed to control access to actual and anticipated hazards. Work zone positioning is based on hazard characterization and exposure assessment. Anticipated work activity, potential releases, and the amount of contaminant dispersion are important for delineating these zones [3]. [Pg.81]

Eye protection was rarely practiced in older laboratories except when particularly hazardous work was carried out. Today such protection is mandatory for practically all laboratory operations. [Pg.38]

Ammonium Sulfamate. A number of flame retardants used for cellulosic materials, including fabrics and paper products, are based on ammonium sulfamate (56). These products are water-soluble and therefore nondurable if treated fabrics are washed or exposed to weathering conditions. For most fabric and paper constructions, efficient flame retardancy can be provided with no apparent effect on color or appearance and without stiffening or adverse effects on the feel of the fabrics. A wide variety of materials are treated, including hazardous work-area clothing, drapes, curtains, decorative materials, blankets, sheets, and specialty industrial papers (57). [Pg.65]

The waste generated by pharmaceutical companies have increased concerns about environmental and human safety. Direct releases of treated solvent wastes, hazardous work conditions, and accidental releases of toxic chemicals into the environment have led to the implementation of many laws and regulations... [Pg.49]

Exptl or hazardous work should only be performed when two persons are present, although each person should have a separate work area assigned in order to avoid the danger of both being injured by the same accident Do Not Smoke... [Pg.235]

Driving and hazardous work should not be performed while taking benzodiazepines because they can impair mental alertness and coordination. Persons taking any of the benzodiazepine medications should never drink alcohol. Use during pregnancy and nursing should be avoided as well. [Pg.74]

Used when the atmosphere contains no known hazard work functions preclude splashes, immersion, potential for inhalation, or direct contact with hazard chemicals... [Pg.596]

Appropriate caution signs must be placed at hazardous work and storage areas. [Pg.37]

Special Hazards. Disposable clothing for hazardous work (as examples, in decontamination, or in atomic radiation at low levels) may be made from unsupported vinyls by welding. [Pg.88]

As a top-priority urgent measure supporting initiation of preparative works on VVER SNF management, one needs creating appropriate conditions for safe carrying out and control over radiation-hazardous works and normal hygiene and sanitary conditions for persoimel (fimctioning of decontamination room, radiation safety service... [Pg.336]

A relatively new concept called suppressive shields is offered to provide protection to the area surrounding hazardous work with pyrotechnic and explosive material. At present, these operations are either limited to small quantities, widely dispersed, or segregated by barricades. Suppressive shields provide an alternative in the form of a vented steel enclosure. [Pg.35]

A relatively new concept is presented for protection to the area surrounding hazardous work with explosives. Suppressive shields are vented composite steel structures which are designed to confine all fragments from an accidental detonation and to suppress hazardous blast and flame effects to a safe level. [Pg.59]

A hydrocarbon of very high mp. Although the small amount of carbon monoxide produced probably presents no hazard, work in a hood. [Pg.423]

Potentially hazardous work practices safe procedures and equipment- common routes of exposure epidemiology, symptoms, and heaitn risks hepatitis B vaccine personal protective equipment OSHA Exposure Control Plan and cleanup, waste handling and labeling. [Pg.175]

Adapted inspection, in which the Danish Working Environment Authority targets its resources on the enterprises which have the most hazardous working environment conditions. [Pg.96]

Dissolve 10 mg of HRP in 0.2 mL of 1.25% glutaraldehyde (electron microscopic grade) in 100 mM sodium phosphate (pH 6.8). Caution glutaraldehyde is hazardous. Work in a fume hood. [Pg.396]

Supportive safety procedures are utilized to ensure that there are necessary controls in place for safe maintenance and repairs that importantly includes nonroutine hazardous work. These procedures encompass rules governing lockout and tagout, confined space entry, elevated work, electrical work, etc. The committee found some minor problems in these supportive procedures and differences among the sites, especially when some of the work is done by subcontractors, who may have their own practices. [Pg.46]

The hazard characteristics of materials will affect exposure and risk. More hazardous materials inherently have a greater probability of adverse health outcomes upon exposure. Sometimes employees will be more careful when using materials that they know have a high hazard potential. But this can only be true when they are knowledgeable about the material s hazard level. If a material is very hazardous, often less-hazardous materials available can be substituted. The same is true for hazardous work processes. Proper substitution can decrease the risk of injury or illness, but care must be taken to ensure that the material or process being substituted is really safer and that it mixes well with the entire product formulation or production/assembly process. [Pg.1160]

In defining hazardous work practices, there are a number of sources of information that should be examined. Injury and accident reports such as the OSHA 301 Form provide information about the circumstances surrounding an injury. Often employee or management behaviors that contributed to the injury can be identified. Employees are a good source of information about workplace hazards. They can be asked to identify critical behaviors that may be important as hazard sources or hazard controls. First-line supervisors are also a good source of information because they are constantly... [Pg.1181]

Like the persistence of poverty, discrimination, and rampant inequality, the continuing threat of hazardous working conditions after centuries of economic development represents an indictment of our society. New products are engineered to accomplish astonishing feats of precision and economy, but the methods used to produce them often remain mired in an earlier age, as if the needs of workers, unlike consumers, are beneath consideration. [Pg.11]

This brief discussion of labor market friction indicates that the sufficient availability of health and safety information is essential to the compensation mechanism. There are several reasons why workers might be less than fully informed. First, some hazardous working conditions, particularly those associated with poorly understood, hard-to-identify occupational diseases, are simply not likely to be taken into consideration. Each... [Pg.42]

It is the ironic feature of assiunption of risk that it penalizes the worker for being conscious of safety conditions and even for making representations to the employer. The reasoning is if the worker knew the dangers existed and yet continued to work, this indicates that the worker consented to these dangers as part of a larger employment transaction had there not been sufficient compensation ex ante the worker would have refused the hazardous work. Perhaps the best-known American case in which this defense was raised was that of Sarah Knisley (1913), who lost an arm in a grinding machine. She had previously complained... [Pg.112]
