The emphasis here is principally on metals rather than the other materials, because metals are simpler, more widely investigated, and better understood than the others. Supported metal nanoparticles are considered here in only a few summary statements, and nanolayers are beyond the scope of the chapter. 

This article is a brief report on the state of knowledge in certain aspects of the field, selected literature citations, a resume of some of our recently published articles (22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59), and summary statements relating to unpublished work by one or both of the authors at the University of California, at Ft. Detrick, Maryland, and at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. 

The evaluative process was used to assess lithium and boric acid for their potential to cause reproductive and developmental toxicity (J.A. Moore et al. 1995b, 1997). The final product is a summary statement that integrates reproductive and developmental data and exposure data. The summary also makes a statement about the certainty of judgment about an agent s reproductive and developmental risk, and critical data needed for reducing uncertainty and improving the risk assessment. 

Summary statements are provided under the heading of reproductive toxicity, embryotoxicity, and teratogenicity. Data from individual studies usually are not presented. 

These Issues and associated topics are discussed in more detail in the following chapters. Each of the Individual authors has provided background information and research data in an effort to review and evaluate the important issues. Finally, each author has provided a summary statement defining the nutrient needs during an aerobic exercise program. 

Make a summary statement in which you point out the weaknesses and omissions of and the critical experiments suggested by, the article and in which you decide whether or not the article represents a proper contribution to the literature (i.e., if you were a panel member of an agency allotting research funds, would you vote to support the work ). 

A summary of the discussion in the TSD section Data Adequacy and Research Needs also should be included in the summary of the AEGL document and the derivation summary tables. The summary statements should address the adequacy of the data by AEGL tier. 

The second and third parts of this review develop, through correlation of the results described in the first part, a picture of the hydration process and the hydration shell (Section VI) and an assessment of how the hydration shell may modulate enzyme and other protein functions (Section VII). The literature on protein hydration is now rich enough to provide a comfortably detailed picture of the protein-water interface. The ways in which the interface enters into function are just beginning to emerge, and one purpose here is to point out directions in which one may move to understand better the relationship to function. Sections VI and VII are meant to stand alone as summary statements, and some overlap with the preceding sections describing results should be expected.
