Biological diversity

Human growth hormone is a very complex molecule biologically. Several diverse biological activities such as anaboHc, insulin-like, diabetogenic, and lactogenic activities have been ascribed to hGH, which also appears to promote water and salt retention. An in-depth discussion of these activities may be found in several excellent reviews available in the Hterature (34—36). 

Most drugs in the pyrimidine series fall into four categories the barbiturates, the sulfonamides, the antimicrobials and the antitumour agents. In addition there are innumerable pyrimidines with diverse biological activities, some of which are in use. 

The interest in indolocarbazoles began in the early 1950s with the first rational synthetic approaches. Since then, this interest has escalated dramatically as numerous derivatives of indolo[2,3-a]carbazole (1) have been isolated from various natural sources. These derivatives were demonstrated to possess highly potent and diverse biological effects, prompting novel efforts in the area. In particular, derivatives of indolo[2,3-n]pyrrolo[3,4-c]carbazole, such as the alkaloid staurosporine (8), have attracted much attention. 

Volume 80 of Advances in Heterocyclic Chemistry Comprises three chapters together with indices. Jan Bergman, Tomasz Janosik, and Niklas Wahlstrdm, all of the KaroUnska Institute, Sweden, have provided an overview of indolocarbazxiles. In the last fifty years, interest in this group has escalated dramatically because numerous derivatives have been isolated as natural compounds, and many of them are shown to possess highly potent and diverse biological effects.

Arylpiperazines have immensely important effects on various and diverse biological targets, in particular on CNS receptors. In the case of serotonin (5-HT) receptors, compounds containing this arylpiperazine moiety represent the largest systematically studied class of 5-HTia receptor ligands [63]. Structural alterations within long-chain arylpiperazines (LCAPs) occur mainly at the two opposite ends of a molecule and have been described by many authors [64-71]. 

Abstract Alkaloids are very much important molecules, not only for chemical reasons but also because of their diverse biological activities. Up to now several reviews have been published explaining the use of biotransformation or microbial transformation techniques to modify alkaloids, which added several advantages over the classical chemical transformation systems. This chapter is a critical update of the microbial transformations reported in the last couple of years, targeting novel biocatalysts from microbes. 

For SAXS and USAXS experiments it is sufficient to measure the distance R by hand or by a laser distance-meter. For MAXS and WAXS, calibration by means of samples with known sharp reflection are required. Such calibration samples are available at synchrotron beamlines. Different materials are used for application in different angular regions (isotropic crystalline materials for WAXS, Ag-behenate for MAXS, diverse biological samples3 for SAXS and USAXS). Calibration sheets are frequently published on the home pages of synchrotron beamlines. 

O-acyl derivatives thereof have shown potent vasodilatory activity [8]. A number of other hetisine alkaloids have shown diverse biological activities. These include nominine [9] (1) (local anesthetic, anti-inflammatory, and antiarrhythmic), hetisine [9a] (4) (hypotensive), ignavine [10] (5) (analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, sedative, antidiuretic), zeravshanisine [9a] (8) (antiarrhythmic and local anesthetic), and tadzhaconine [9a, 11], (9) (antiarrhythmic) (Chart 1.3).

The orsellinic acid derivative lasiodiplodin 84 and its de-O-methyl congener are found, i.a., in the roots of Arnebia euchroma, a plant which is used in traditional Chinese medicine. These compounds elicit diverse biological responses as inhibitors of prostaglandin biosynthesis, cyctotoxic agents, and plant growth regulators. 

Although many insect defensive compounds are endowed with diverse biological activities, few of them have been studied in depth to evaluate their potential pharmacological activities. Cantharidin (98) (Fig. 16),pederin (104) (Fig. 18), and some of the alkaloids isolated from ants (e.g., the solenopsins 109 and 110, Fig. 19) have been the subject of most of the investigations. These topics have been reviewed several times [111, 214,215], and we will only summarize here the most recent data.
