Falls/falling

Aim to protect the health and safety of everyone in the workplace and ensure that adequate welfare facilities are provided. Covers e.g. general ventilation, temperature in indoor workplaces, lighting, cleanliness, space requirements, condition of floors and traffic routes, measures against falls/falling objects, washing facilities. [Pg.596]

Tiffin et al., 1978a, 1978b Kohn et al., 1980 Hottovy, Kohn, and Luks, 1981, 1982 Kohn, Merrill, and Luks, 1983 Merrill, 1983 Merrill, Luks, and Kohn, 1983 Fall and Luks, 1984 Fall, Fall, and Luks, 1985). More recently Peters, de Swaan Arons, and coworkers have added C2 and C2-hydrocarbon mixtures to this data base (Peters, Lichtenthaler, and de Swaan Arons, 1986 Peters, de Roo, and Lichtenthaler, 1987 Peters, van der Kooi, and de Swaan Arons, 1987 Peters, de Roo, and de Swaan Arons, 1987 Peters, Spiegelaar, and de Swaan Arons, 1988 Coorens, Peters, and de Swaan Arons, 1988 de Goede et al., 1989). Much of this work is performed at cryogenic temperatures so it has application in the liquefied natural gas industry. Nonetheless, the phase behavior observed for these systems is entirely analogous to the phase behavior of the previously described systems. [Pg.77]

It is not hard to find this legislative lexicon of safety - the legalese -on construction sites, often within safety documentation and induction materials. The safe systems of work and working environment found in Clauses 2(a) and 2(d) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, respectively can be easily found throughout our safety documentation. They are often either associated with general management practices or focused on specific work tasks such as falls/ fall prevention or excavations, where guidance often makes explicit reference to a safe system of work. ... [Pg.83]

In the account given by Crystal, the most important part of the contour is the nucleus which is the only mandatory part of an intonation phrase. The nuclear accent can take one of several configurations, e.g. fall, fall-rise, low rise. Other parts of the contour are termed the tail (T) which follows the nucleus, the head (H) which starts at the first accented syllable of the intonation phrase and continues to the nucleus, and the pre-head (P) which precedes the head. The intonation phrase has a grammar of (P) (H) N (T), where the brackets denote optional elements. [Pg.239]

Falls Falls of people and objects from scaffolds are another hazard. Controls discussed earlier apply. [Pg.136]

Fall arrest systems used in construction work—A device that permits an arrested fall is considered a fall arrest system. In construction work, a body harness must be used in these systems. A fall arrest system can only be used where the aerial lift or scaffold is designed to withstand the vertical and lateral loads caused by an arrested fall. Fall arrest systems used in construction must comply with 1926.502(d). That provision prohibits the use of a body belt in a fall arrest system and instead requires the use of a body harness. [Pg.1399]

Falls Falls from elevated areas of the rig (e.g., stabbing board, monkey board, ladder) falls from rig floor to grade... [Pg.260]

Because injuries received from falls in the workplace are such a common occurrence— in a typical year more than 10,000 workers will lose their lives in falls—safety officials need to be aware of not only fall hazards but also the need to institute a fall protection safety program (Kohr, 1989). Just how frequent and serious are accidents related to falls Let s look at a few telling facts about falls in the workplace. The National Safety Council s annual report typically predicts 1400 or more deaths and more than 400,000 disabling injuries to occur each year due to falls. Falls are the leading cause of disabling injuries in the United States, accounting for close to 18% of all workers compensation claims. A Bureau of Labor Statistics 24-state survey reported that 60% of elevated falls were under 10 feet, and 50% of those were under 5 feet (Pater, 1985). The primary causes of falls have been identified as the following (Kohr, 1989) ... [Pg.271]

The passage of this standard, 1926.500-503, is intended to curb the rise in workplace fatalities due to falls. While workplace fatalities continue to decline, fatalities from falls continue to increase. There were 684 deaths throughout industry in 1996 as a result of falls. Falls represent 11 percent of the total for all workplace fatalities. [Pg.252]
