Slipping falls, prevention

Review facility historical accident and injury records to assist in identifying slip, trip, and fall hazards. Establish written housekeeping procedures and reqnire everyone including patient care staff to immediately report spills and other floor hazards. Incorporate slip, trip, and fall prevention education into recurring safety training. Conduct awareness campaigns to educate employees about the risk of slips, trips, and falls. Provide feedback on the actions taken to prevent slip, trip, and fall injuries.

Statistics for the 1950-1952 period revealed that 74% of the falls studied occurred at floor level for the period 1975-1977 such falls accounted for 58% of the total reported. When such accidents occur as a result of obstructions or uneven floor surfaces, preventative action is obvious, but the prevention of slipping falls—once shown to be the majority type— is less straightforward. Not surprisingly pedestrian friction is now emerging as a key area for research study.

Properly patch holes in the warehouse floor as they occur. Doing this can help prevent a slip/ fall injury, and it will help cushion the ride for powered equipment operators. 

Use rubber floor mats to prevent foot fatigue. Keep floor mats flat curled or loose mat ends can create tripping hazards. Torn bags may allow product to spill on the floors causing slip/fall... 

Most of the cases of fretting met with in practice appear to fall into two distinct classes according to whether or not the surfaces involved in the component are intended to undergo some relative motion. If the surfaces are not intended to move, then the first objective should be to prevent slip, either by eliminating the source of vibration, or by increasing the friction between the surfaces. It is believed that the success of certain soft metal electrodeposits in reducing fretting may be due to the improved fit, and hence possibly increased friction, which is obtained from their use. If the displacements cannot be controlled in this way, it may be possible to interpose a thin sheet of an elastic material which can accept the relative movement without slip. 

Falls are common In homes. They can cause Injuries. They occur in bathrooms. They occur in the kitchen. They occur on stairs. They can be prevented by cleaning up spills quickly and using a step stool when you need to reaoh something in a high place. They can also be prevented by using only non-slip rugs and removing items on stairways that could oause you to trip. 

The number of fatalities arising from any identified hazard will depend on several factors, such as the nature of the hazard, the number of people likely to be involved and whether there are any factors mitigating the effects of the hazard. There are many models of varying accuracy and complexity which are available to predict the effects of hazardous events, such as fires, explosions and toxic releases, on people and property. A discussion of them is beyond the scope of this chapter, but for further information the reader is directed to the appropriate chapters of the seminal work by FP Lees Loss Prevention in the Process Industries 2nd Edition (Butterworth Heinemann 1996). Designers should be aware that the effects of major accidents can be felt many kilometres off-site. It is often possible to take a simple view however -lesser and more common (but still serious) events, such as the rupture of a vessel, a small fire, or local release of a harmful material, will clearly have potentially fatal consequences to anyone close by. Fatalities arising from slips, trips, falls and contact with moving machinery are obvious and require no modelling. 

A person may fall down on the floor at the same level by slipping while working or walking briskly. A person may fall because of the collapse of a piece of equipment, ladder, structural support, or hoist on which he is working. Preventive measures should be adopted while working at these places.

Housekeeping is the routine care and cleaning that needs to be acted on daily in order for a facility to function safety and properly. In Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulation 29 CFR 1910.38 (b) (3), it states that the employer shall control accumulations of flammable and combustible waste materials and residues so that they do not contribute to a fire emergency. Additionally, housekeeping procedures shall be included in the written fire prevention plan. Additionally, 29 CFR 1926.25 similarly states the need for housekeeping activities at construction locations. Common injuries due to poor housekeeping include slips, trips, and falls.
