Fall protection definitions

Residential construction poses special concerns for contractors. One of the biggest concerns is falls, so OSHA requires fall protection that meets the residential construction requirements of 29 CFR 1926.501(b)(13). According to the regulation, residential construction employers generally must ensure that employees working six feet or more above lower levels use conventional fall protection methods, including guardrails, safety nets, or personal fall arrest systems. A personal fall arrest system may consist of a full body harness, a deceleration device, a lanyard, and an anchor point. (See the definition of personal fall arrest system at 1926.500). 

The fall protection rule specifies the (1) areas and operations where fall protection systems are required, and the options you have to provide the protection (1926.501—Scope, application, and definitions applicable to this subpart), (2) criteria for the fall protection systems you choose (1926.502—Duty to have fall protection), and (3) required training (1926.503—Training requirements).

Falls in the workplace are the leading cause of death to workers this also includes workers within the Service Industry. Thus, the need for fall protection in workplaces when workers are performing their jobs is definitely a requirement. Fall protection must be provided so that workers can concentrate on the job tasks without any fear of falling. Requirements relating to fall protection, as described in this chapter, do not apply to scaffolds, cranes and derricks, ladders and stairways, or electrical power transmission and distribution, each of which has its own requiranents. The major components of fall protection, described herein, are for installation, construction, and proper use of body harnesses and belts, lanyards, and lifelines, and the reqnire-ments for the training of fall protection. 

In construction work, the fall protection requirements in Subpart M of the construction standards do not apply to vehicles such as trucks. The definition at 29 CFR 1926.500(b) of a walking/working surface excludes ladders, vehicles, or trailers on which employees must be located in order to perform their job duties. There could, however, be hazardous situations where general standard for personal protective equipment, 1926.95(a) or the General Duty Clause of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, 29 USC 654(a)(l), could apply.

Even though the January 1, 1998, passage of 1926.500-503 applies to the construction industry, there is a definite need for fall protection in general industry. Within warehouses, body harnesses and lanyards are to be worn while working off ladders, on or near elevations not protected by handrails, on roofs, on crane runways, on forklift platforms, or in any other worlq)lace situation where the worker is not protected from falls by railing or netting. Twelve to fourteen workers die each year as a result of falling from the forks of a lift truck. 

The use of catalysts for exploiting renewable energy sources, producing clean fuels in refineries, and minimizing the by-product formation in industry also fall within the definition of environmental catalysis. In the future, the continuous effort to control transport emissions, improve indoor ah quality, and decontaminate polluted water and soil will further boost catalytic technology. All in all, catalysts will continue to be a valuable asset in the effort to protect human health, the natural environment, and the existence of life on Earth.

Figure 12.10c indicates the evolution of the same wine exposed to air, after sulfiting at 55 mg/1. When the free SO2 concentration falls to zero after 48 hours, the laccase activity has been completely destroyed. The wine is thus definitively protected from oxidasic casse. The yellow color component and especially the red color component increase with exposure to air. 

In order to facilitate practical support allowing interpretations and explicit applications of these new requirements, an expert group on PSA in the frame supervisory activities, chaired by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BIS), has been established in fall 2012. One topic of discussions is the definition of a significant impact on the PSA results. Moreover, practical examples shall be collected to illustrate a possible risk informed approach.
