Falling behind

Close control of the contract should be kept at all times. This is where formal site meetings, with reports of progress, can be most useful and can help to steer a late contract back on the right course. When a contract begins to fall behind the agreed program, it is important to find out why and to rectify the problem. It is in everyone s interest to see the plant commissioned on the agreed date, and a casual attitude by the project leader should never be taken. He should be strict with anyone who causes a contract to slip behind schedule. 

There are legitimate reasons why a contract can fall behind, and some of these are referred to in (1) to (8) above. However, item (8) must not be tolerated, and the contractor should be taken to task early in the contract when this occurs. Close monitoring will show how the contractor is progressing, and where the contractor has fallen down so badly that there seems to be no end to the contract, and then the client should seriously consider determining the contract. 

As a project progresses and you monitor performance, there will be times when actual does not measure up to plan. This calls for corrective action. However, don t be too quick to take action. Some deficiencies turn out to be self-correcting. It is unrealistic to expect steady and consistent progress day after day. Sometimes you ll fall behind and sometimes you ll be ahead, but in a well-planned project, you will probably finish on schedule and within budget. 

When the project begins to fall behind in schedule, three alternatives may correct the problem. The first is to examine the work remaining to be done and decide whether the lost time can be recovered in the next steps. If this is not feasible, consider offering an incentive for on-time completion of the project. The incentive could be justified if you compare this expenditure to potential losses due to late completion. Finally, consider deploying more resources. This too will cost more, but may offset further losses from delayed completion. 

Recover during later steps If you begin to fall behind in early stages of a project, re-examine budgets and schedules for later stages. Perhaps you can save on later stages so the overall budget and/or schedule is met. X X... 

When the speed profile of a gas is measured in this way, the results give a distribution like the one shown in Figure 5-lb. If all the molecules traveled at the same speed, they would reach the detector at the same time, in a single clump. Instead, faster molecules move ahead of the main packet, and slower molecules fall behind. This experiment shows that molecules in a gas have a distribution of speeds. 

Jaffe et al (Ref 3), in the course of determination of the shock pressure required to initiate detonation of an acceptor in the shock sensitivity test, found that the velocity of the front as sensed by the pressure probe method, falls behind the true velocity of the shock front as the shock is attenuated. It has also been found that the maximum transmitted shock velocity generated by the two Tetryl pellets and measured in Lucite is 4.6mm/frsec. Shock velocities determined by optical method, shown in Table 3, p 25, run between 2.701... 

Pace yourself. Glance at your watch every few minutes, and compare the time to how far you have gotten in the section. When one-quarter of the time has elapsed, you should be a quarter of the way through the section, and so on. If you are falling behind, pick up the pace a bit.

Note, further, that this leveling off occurs at progressively lower potentials as the concentration of electrolyte increases. Increasing both the potential and the electrolyte concentration tends to increase the field in the double layer (see Table 12.1), which in turn increases the viscosity of solvent in the double layer. As the effective viscosity of the medium increases, the surface of shear occurs progressively further from the surface. This accounts for the fact that hs falls behind J/0 as [/0 increases. These conclusions are consistent with the experimental observation that HS for Agl becomes independent of the concentration of the potentialdetermining Ag + and I ions once the concentrations of these ions are well removed from the conditions at which the particles are uncharged. 

It has been found that from a homogeneous solution the oxalate of samarium is preferentially precipitated over oxalates of other rare earths and yttrium falls behind all of them. Thus, in a separation process Sm is concentrated to a greater extent at the head section and Y at the tail section [45].

Retardation. A mobilized particle inherently falls behind the moving fluid since the drag force experienced by the particle is proportional to the relative velocity. Hydrodynamic conditions around the tortuous geometry of the pore space, gravity, inertial effects, high flow velocity and collisions enhance retardation. Retardation increases the local concentration of particles near pore throats.
