National Safety Council

National Safety Council statisticians have created a comprehensive system for tracking and compiling injury and illness data, including annual publication of the aforementioned Injury Facts, an authoritative compendium of safety and health statistics. Council researchers also produce the Journal of Safety Research, an international, interdisciplinary scientific quarterly that contains research articles written by experts in all fields. The council s Environmental Health Center, based in Washington, D.C., is a leading provider of credible and timely information and community-based programs on environmental and public health issues. 

The council, a not-for-profit organization, promotes safety throughout the United States. The National Safety Council (NSC) recently announced its new SMS. The system can provide companies with a structure to implement a comprehensive and balanced safety management function. Workplace safety and transportation safety remain critical areas of focus. The NSC saves lives by preventing injuries and deaths at work, in homes and communities, and on the roads through the use of leadership, research, education, and advocacy. The council vision statement simply says. Making Our World Safer.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the injury frequency rate for all manufacturing companies rose from 11.8 in 1960 to 15.3 in 1970. The National Safety Council estimates that there are around 15,000 job-related deaths each year and another 2,300,000 workers suffer disabling injuries. Professor Crowl has an active research program on flammability and reactivity and has published numerous papers in these areas. He serves on several AICHE/CCPS committees, including the Undergraduate Education Committee, the Technical Steering Committee, the Inherent Safety Committee, and the Risk Assessment Committee. He is also a member of the advisory committee for the Institute for Safety Through Design of the National Safety Council.

This chapter covered only a small proportion of the vast number of chemicals that can be found in the workplace. For more definitive information on a wide variety of toxic substances, the reader is referred to standard references on industrial toxicology. Of these, one of the most useful for a quick summary of toxic effects and management is Chemical Hazards in the Workplace by N. H. Proctor and J. P. Hughes. Definitive reviews of many chemicals are published by the American Industrial Hygiene Association and the National Safety Council among others. Sources are given in Appendix III. 

One of the best ways to determine that potential is to examine the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), which by law in most jurisdictions must be provided by the manufacturer for any hazardous material used in the workplace and made available to the employees by plant management. The MSDS provides all the information necessary to determine the hazard potential and the requirements for control of any hazardous substance. Still other information can be found in the various guidelines published by the American Industrial Health Association, or by the U.S. National Safety Council, or by NIOSH (the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) or various other national, state, or provincial government bodies. (See Appendix II for information on sources.) Once you have an inventory, of course, you can start relating potential health problems to possible sources in particular areas. Also, in the process of preparing this report, you will begin to build an invaluable library that will stand you in good stead for further consideration of the problems at hand.
