Surface composites

Suppose that a composite surface consists of patches of fli = 20° and 62 = 70°. Compare Eqs. X-27 and X-28 by plotting versus/2 as calculated by each equation. [Pg.380]

A more dramatic type of restmctiiring occurs with the adsorption of alkali metals onto certain fee metal surfaces [39]. In this case, multilayer composite surfaces are fomied in which the alkali and metal atoms are intemiixed in an ordered stmcture. These stmctiires involve the substitution of alkali atoms into substrate sites, and the details of the stmctiires are found to be coverage-dependent. The stmctiires are influenced by the repulsion between the dipoles fomied by neighbouring alkali adsorbates and by the interactions of the alkalis with the substrate itself [40]. [Pg.299]

As long as the liquid actually wets the rough surface, a less contentious approach linking the roughness factor to the extent of contact would seem to be via the spreading coefficient as shown in Eq. 20 and summarised in Table 1. If air is trapped within pits by the liquid, a composite surface is produced. [Pg.330]

Cassie [39] extended Wenzel s treatment to composite surfaces. His treatment can be applied to a rough surface incompletely wetted by a liquid so that it consists of an area fraction f wetted and /2 unwetted surface. Then ... [Pg.330]

Surface treatment of the composite can have a significant effect on adhesion. Surface treatment enhances one or more of the mechanisms described previously. Wu et al. [15] studied the effects of surface treatment on adhesive bonding for AS-4/APC-2 laminates. They found that the greatest bond strength was achieved from acid etching and plasma etching the composite surface. Table 1 summarizes the various surface treatments that were evaluated. [Pg.1011]

The CRC-Elsevier materials selector , 2nd edition, N.A. Waterman, and M.E Ashby CRC Press (1996) ISBN 0412615509. (Now, also available on CD-ROM). Basic reference work. Three-volume compilation of data for all materials includes selection and design guide. The Materials Selector is the most comprehensive and up-to-date comparative information system on engineering materials and related methods of component manufacture. It contains information on the properties, performance and processability of metals, plastics, ceramics, composites, surface treatments and the characteristics and comparative economics of the manufacturing routes which convert these materials into engineering components and products. [Pg.601]

The fact that the photon does traverse the lattice planes does not mean that the photon wUl be absorbed or even scattered by the solid. The reflectance of the photon is a function of the nature of the compositional surface, whereas absorption depends upon the interior composition of the solid. A "resonance" condition must exist before the photon can transfer energy to the solid (absorption of the photon), hi the following, we show this resonance condition in general terms of both R A. [Pg.414]

Apparatus and Procedure. The apparatus and procedure were identical to those outlined in ref. Surface composition measurements were based on an O2-CO titration technique described by Miura and Gonzalez (5-6). The ratio of surface metal/02/CO was 1/1/T on Ru-sllica, 1/0.5/1.75 on Rh-sllica, 1/0.5/2.0 on Pt-silica and 1/0.5/1.6 on Ir-silica. These titration ratios were found to be independent of surface composition. Surface compositions determined by the O2-CO titration method have been verified using a variety of experimental techniques (2,5-6). [Pg.295]

The fate of injected liposomes is drastically altered by administration route, dose and size, lipid composition, surface modification, and encapsulated drugs. Liposomes encapsulating drugs are often administered iv, therefore, the stability of liposomes in plasma is important. When liposomes composed of PC with unsaturated fatty acyl chains are incubated in the presence of serum, an efflux of internal solute from the liposomes is observed. This increase in permeability is caused by the transfer of phospholipids to high density lipoprotein (HDL) in serum (55). To reduce the efflux of liposomal contents, cholesterol is added as a liposomal component... [Pg.34]

The important attributes of liposomes as a drug carrier are (a) they are biologically inert and completely biodegradable (b) they pose no concerns of toxicity, antigenicity, or pyrogenicity, because phospholipids are natural components of all cell membranes (c) they can be prepared in various sizes, compositions, surface charges, and so forth, depending on the requirements of... [Pg.553]

The reason for the correlation between the localization and the amino acid composition was sought by Andrade et al. (1998). They examined the amino acid composition of proteins with known localization and three-dimensional structure in three ways total composition, surface composition, and interior composition. The principal component analysis showed the best correlation between the surface composition and the localization. Therefore, they concluded that the correlation is the result of evolutionary adaptation of proteins to the surrounding environment. [Pg.329]

Pharmacological strategy of CNTs generally relies on four main critical issues (1) preparation of nanovectors, (2) uptake, (3) function, and (4) elimination (Fig. 12.4). The physicochemical characteristics of CNTs including size, shape, aggregation, chemical composition, surface functionalization, and solubility play an important role in the biodistribution and pharmacokinetics of nanomaterials (Champion et al., 2007 Kostarelos, 2003 Lacerda et al., 2006 Nishiyama, 2007 Oberdorster et al., 2005 Radomski et al., 2005)... [Pg.292]

The combined use of the modem tools of surface science should allow one to understand many fundamental questions in catalysis, at least for metals. These tools afford the experimentalist with an abundance of information on surface structure, surface composition, surface electronic structure, reaction mechanism, and reaction rate parameters for elementary steps. In combination they yield direct information on the effects of surface structure and composition on heterogeneous reactivity or, more accurately, surface reactivity. Consequently, the origin of well-known effects in catalysis such as structure sensitivity, selective poisoning, ligand and ensemble effects in alloy catalysis, catalytic promotion, chemical specificity, volcano effects, to name just a few, should be subject to study via surface science. In addition, mechanistic and kinetic studies can yield information helpful in unraveling results obtained in flow reactors under greatly different operating conditions. [Pg.2]

The results of these experiments indicate that EE may be used to detect microfracture events on the composite surface, and signal the early stages of composite failure. It also clarifies the source of AE as a function of strain by the presence or absence of AE-EE correlations, and allows more details of failure mechanisms and composite characterization to be obtained. [Pg.161]
