In recent years simultaneous progress in the understanding and engineering of block copolymer microstructures and the development of new templating strategies that make use of sol-gel and controlled crystalHzation processes have led to a quick advancement in the controlled preparation of nanoparticles and mesoporous structures. It has become possible to prepare nanoparticles of various shapes (sphere, fiber, sheet) and composition (metal, semiconductor, ceramic) with narrow size distribution. In addition mesoporous materials with different pore shapes (sphere, cyHndrical, slit) and narrow pore size distributions can be obtained. Future developments will focus on applications of these structures in the fields of catalysis and separation techniques. For this purpose either the cast materials themselves are already functional (e.g., Ti02) or the materials are further functionalized by surface modification. [Pg.25]

Encapsulants are necessary for electrical Isolation of the photovoltaic circuit. They also provide mechanical protection for the solar cell wafers and corrosion protection for the metal contacts and circuit interconnect system over the 20-year design life of a photovoltaic array. The required components Include the solar cell circuit, the rigid or structural member, the pottant, and the outer cover/insulator. Surface modifications may be needed to develop strong, stable bonds at the Interfaces in the composite. If the module is to be framed, edge sealants may also be required. The purpose of this chapter is to deal with the surface modification of cellulose fibres in order to provide them with specific functionalities, so that they can play determining roles in such applications as reinforcing elements for composite materials, self-contained composite structures, anti-pollution aids, hybrid materials, superhydrophobic surfaces and conductive and magnetic materials. Other types of surface modifications, such as those associated with dying or the manufacture of chromosorb, enzymatic and ion-exchange supports, fall outside the scope of this review. Within the structure of this book, this chapter constitutes in many ways a bridge between the chemistry associated with bulk modification treated in Chapter 16 and the processing and properties of composite materials in Chapter 19, with the addition of more specific aspects. [Pg.386]
