Newer batteries can be divided into small rechargeable batteries for consumer electronics, cell-phones and laptop computers primarily, and larger advanced storage systems. The field of research on battery concepts and materials has recently... [Pg.448]

The principles discussed in this chapter have a host of practical applications. Whenever you start your car, turn on your cell phone, or use a remote control for your television or other devices, you are making use of a voltaic cell. Many of our most important elements, including hydrogen and chlorine, are made in electrolytic cells. These applications, among others, are discussed in Section 18.6. ... [Pg.481]

I ve never heard of it, my waitress said with a smile when asked how to get to Jimmy s Uptown, the most conspicuous of the Harlem re-Renaissance night spots. The bartender talked over us on her cell phone. It was too cold, and too Wednesday, for that. [Pg.66]

That s when Gwyneth Paltrow walked in. Gwyneth Paltrow No. 1. A white blonde, she faced the bar, put her bag down on the pastel, serape-striped barstool, opened it, picked up her cell phone, flipped it open and flipped it shut like someone checking a gun clip. [Pg.84]

Stressed, he said on his cell phone while shopping in Chinatown on Thursday morning. [Pg.102]

There was no reception in the place, she complained, speaking of the cell phone service. [Pg.157]

Multicavity filters. Multicavity Fabry-Perot filters are used to make very narrow transmission filters. A simple Fabry-Perot cavity (see Ch. 2) consists of a halfwave layer surrounded by two reflectors of typically 10 layers each. Figure 4 shows three transmission profiles obtained with one, two or three cavity filters. The three cavity HL) 5HH(LH) 5) " 3 filter has a 1.2 nm bandwidth. It has 60 layers. Note that the three-peak top of the transmittance. Each cavity has to be well adapted to the following one if not the resulting transmittance can be very poor. Such cavities are broadly used in telecoms in between arrays of antennas for cell phones. [Pg.330]

Interestingly, the PEMFC may also operate directly on methanol. Naturally, the problems associated with high coverage of various intermediates will be present, as mentioned above, as well as additional problems such as loss of methanol over the membrane. Nevertheless, it is possible to operate a methanol fuel cell with a voltage around 0.4 V and a reasonable current, to power small mobile devices such as portable computers and cell phones and make them independent of connection to the conventional power net. For more details on fuel cells we refer the reader to L. Carr-ette, K.A. Friedrich and U. Stimming, Fuel Cells 1(1) (2001) 5-39. [Pg.344]

Flame retardants in printed circuit boards partnership. Circuit boards are commonly used in electronics in consumer and industrial products, including computers and cell phones. In order to ensure fire safety, manufacturers commonly produce circuit boards with flame-retardant chemicals. While serving an important performance function, some flame-retardant chemicals can be harmful if released into the environment. To better understand the issues and the full range of options for flame-retarding circuit boards, DfE is engaging with the electronics industry and other stakeholders in a partnership. [Pg.301]

Subcategory A encompasses the manufacture of all batteries in which cadmium is the reactive anode material. Cadmium anode batteries currently manufactured are based on nickel-cadmium, silver-cadmium, and mercury-cadmium couples (Table 32.1). The manufacture of cadmium anode batteries uses various raw materials, which comprises cadmium or cadmium salts (mainly nitrates and oxides) to produce cell cathodes nickel powder and either nickel or nickel-plated steel screen to make the electrode support structures nylon and polypropylene, for use in manufacturing the cell separators and either sodium or potassium hydroxide, for use as process chemicals and as the cell electrolyte. Cobalt salts may be added to some electrodes. Batteries of this subcategory are predominantly rechargeable and find application in calculators, cell phones, laptops, and other portable electronic devices, in addition to a variety of industrial applications.1-4 A typical example is the nickel-cadmium battery described below. [Pg.1311]

Electronic products become e-waste when they are deemed at the end of their useful life. Nonfunctioning or obsolescent TVs, computers, printers, photocopiers, cell phones, fax machines, home appliances, lighting equipment, games and such, when no longer wanted, come to constitute e-waste. These electronic products contain many materials requiring special end-of-life handling, most prominently lead, mercury, arsenic, chromium, cadmium, and plastics capable of releasing dioxins and furans. [Pg.264]

The main aims of this chapter are to provide estimates for the amounts of pollutants emitted from processed electronic waste (e-waste) and assess the magnitudes of human exposure to these pollutants. Specifically in this chapter, e-waste is defined as the sum of discarded personal computers, electronic/electrical equipment, electronic entertainment devices, cell phones, television sets, and refrigerators. In another word, e-waste explicitly refers to electronics at their end of life cycle and disposed by end users rather than surplus electronics (brand new products). In addition, e-waste also does not include reusable (e.g., repairable electronics or second hand electronics) and secondary scraps (e.g., noble metals, plastics, and rubbers). [Pg.280]

Manufacture of cell phones and personal computers consumes 3% of gold and silver mined worldwide each year, and 13% of palladium and 15% of cobalt as well. Electronics contain approximately 60 elements, some valuable and hazardous, or both [13], Recycling the valuable elements is the driving force behind the intensive activities engaged in disposal of e-waste. [Pg.281]

Perhaps you have just purchased a new electronic device, such as a personal computer, video camera, pager, or cell phone. The advanced circuitry in such devices can malfunction in humid environments. Moisture can reroute and even short circuit electric signals, impairing the operation of your new electronic equipment. Manufacturers recognize that moisture can adversely affect their products and... [Pg.30]

The question we pose here is, what happens if the load is far away from the converter Note that far away need not just be in terms of an absolute physical distance. For example, that description could well apply to a typical clamshell cell phone (flip type), where the converter is located on one half and its load on the other, with very narrow traces running... [Pg.50]

Batteries have been developed from many pairs of chemicals capable of being oxidized and reduced. Some systems are rechargeable after the chemicals in the battery have been exhausted, the reactions can be reversed by the application of an external source of electricity. The lead-acid automobile battery is a familiar example. In many applications, such as cell phones and laptop computers, the weight of a portable electricity supply is critical. This has led to the development of batteries based on lightweight lithium chemistry, for which challenges still remain. [Pg.166]

We also use small rechargeable batteries to power cell phones and portable computers. They are reasonably light and have the capacity to go for some hours before requiring recharging, but improvements are still needed. As chemists and chemical engineers develop better battery technology we can expect to be freed... [Pg.168]

Strength ACSO (Aiken County Sheriffs Office) personnel had Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in their vehicles and were directed to utilize it. ACSO Sheriff contacted neighboring county Sheriffs directly via cell phone to coordinate safe arrival direction to the staging area. ADPS (Aiken Department of Public Safety) Staging officer directed rescue personnel through specified safety routes. US-OSHA representatives offered support on Day 2 and identified no safety concerns for responders. [Pg.10]

Improvement Item 211 (Aiken County Help Line) received calls immediately but had no information to provide initially. 211 received updated information via television news report. As a result, 211 personnel did not learn key information such as the shelter-inplace message that had been transmitted to residents. 211 was not accessible via cell phone. Additional number needs to be provided. EOC was receiving updated information via television news reports. Media staging area was located too close to CP. [Pg.17]

Temporary use of hotel rooms and drive-through facilities Procurement or confiscation of medicines and vaccines Seizure of cell phones and other walkie-talkie type equipment Decontamination of buildings Seizure and destruction of contaminated articles Management of Persons... [Pg.329]
