Cadmium. In 1989, U.S. consumption of cadmium for coatings was 1474 t (7), compared to 1552 t in 1970, 2089 t in 1979, and 1230 t in 1985. Cadmium plating amounts to about 15% of total cadmium production (see Cadmiumand cadmium alloys). Of the cadmium being plated in 1989, 30% was for automotive parts, over 22% for electronics, and 18% for industrial fasteners. Because of cadmium s high and weU-pubHcized toxicity and very tight waste restrictions, there are considerable efforts to develop alternative materials, and the quantities of cadmium used in electroplating ate expected to decrease. Subcategory A encompasses the manufacture of all batteries in which cadmium is the reactive anode material. Cadmium anode batteries currently manufactured are based on nickel-cadmium, silver-cadmium, and mercury-cadmium couples (Table 32.1). The manufacture of cadmium anode batteries uses various raw materials, which comprises cadmium or cadmium salts (mainly nitrates and oxides) to produce cell cathodes nickel powder and either nickel or nickel-plated steel screen to make the electrode support structures nylon and polypropylene, for use in manufacturing the cell separators and either sodium or potassium hydroxide, for use as process chemicals and as the cell electrolyte. Cobalt salts may be added to some electrodes. Batteries of this subcategory are predominantly rechargeable and find application in calculators, cell phones, laptops, and other portable electronic devices, in addition to a variety of industrial applications.1-4 A typical example is the nickel-cadmium battery described below. [Pg.1311]

Replacing zinc with cadmium produces a cell with an OCV of 0.90 V, with characteristics very similar to those of the zinc-mercuric oxide system described above, but which is able to be stored and operated at extreme temperatures (—55 to 80°C) due to the low solubility of cadmium oxide even in concentrated KOH. Cells have been successfully operated at 180°C. Note that hydrogen generation does not occur at a cadmium anode.
