Basic construction

There are a number of special variants of the basic horizontal or vertical decanter for simple clarification and dewatering. Special designs are available for three-phase separation, for thickening applications, with a filtration section, for leaching, for washing, and those for operating at extra high temperature and pressure. [Pg.86]

Heat transfer to the tubes on the furnace walls is predominantly by radiation. In modem designs this radiant section is surmounted by a smaller section in which the combustion [Pg.770]

The burners are positioned at base or sides of radiant section. Gaseous and liquid fuels are used. The combustion air may be preheated in tubes in the convection section. [Pg.771]

Between 50 to 70 per cent of the total heat is transferred in the radiant section. [Pg.772]

The gas temperature will depend on the fuel used and the amount of excess air. For gaseous fuels around 20% excess air is normally used, and 25% for liquid fuels. [Pg.772]

Photocells The basic construction of a photocell is illustrated in Figure 17. A photocmrent flows when the photocathode is illuminated, this is proportional to the intensity of illiunination if the supply potential has been chosen to be higher than the saturation potential. A minimal potential is required between the photocathode and the anode in order to be able to collect the electrons that are emitted. The sensitivity is independent of frequency up to 10 Hz. The temperatme sensitivity of evacuated photocells is very small. The dark cmrent (see below) is ca. 10 " A[l]. [Pg.25]

For all materials other than basic constructional steels and cast irons, reputable suppliers have information bases and applications laboratories from which information can be obtained. Trade organizations representing categories of materials suppliers are excellent sources of information some are listed at the end of this chapter. The materials suppliers should be consulted in conjunction with equipment suppliers in order to ensure that the information generated is fully applicable to the end use to which the material is to be put. Fabrication techniques should be agreed between the two types of suppliers, since some materials cannot be cast or welded and forging cannot make some items. [Pg.897]

Muller (1951, 1956) developed this instrument, which for the first time enabled extensive details of the atomic structure of a solid surface to be seen directly. Figure 1.1 illustrates schematically the basic construction of a FIM. The specimen is prepared in the form of a fine wire or needle, which has been chemically or electrochemically polished to a sharp point with an end radius typically 50-100 nm. For facilities susceptible to the contamination of nitroglycerin liquids and vapors, basic construction materials of wood framing, reinforced concrete, fiberglass reinforced plastic, and sandwich panels were chosen for development of architectural details incorporating lead conductive floor lining, equipment doors, personnel escape chutes and doors, ceiling and wall interfaces, interior finishes, joint sealing, door and wall louvers, wall vents, wall penetrations, and fixed windows. [Pg.69]

For facilities susceptible to nitrocellulose, single base and multibase dusts, the same details could be used with the addition of alternate basic construction types. Six types of construction were chosen which included wood frame, concrete masonry units, reinforced concrete, modified preengineered buildings, fiberglass reinforced plastic and sandwich panels. These were chosen for development of architectural details similar to those mentioned above for nitroglycerin facilities except troweled-on conductive floor lining was to be used instead of lead. [Pg.69]

For in situ x-ray diffraction measurements, the basic construction of an electrochemical cell is a cell-type enclosure of an airtight stainless steel body. A beryllium window, which has a good x-ray transmission profile, is fixed on an opening in the cell. The cathode material can be deposited directly on the beryllium window, itself acting as a positive-electrode contact. A glass fiber separator soaked in liquid electrolyte is then positioned in contact with the cathode followed by a metal anode (3). The carcass ply/plies coat compound functions are basically the same as the steel breaker compound. Another example of an important construction material in the Middle East is portland cement. For example, all-purpose Type I and sulfate-resisting Type V portland cements are manufactured in Saudi Arabia in three plants at Hofuf, Jeddah, and Riyadh. The cement production from the three plants totaled 1,790,000 tons in 1978 which is about a 38.5 percent rise over 1977. Portland cement is a basic construction material, and is primarily consumed by the construction industry. In Saudi Arabia cement does not seem to be encountering competition from any other building materials which are capable of endangering its present level of demand. [Pg.233]

Based on the previous discussion, it can be seen that there is a high demand for basic construction materials such as asphalt and portland cement. This demand cannot be fulfilled by existing local supplies. Moreover, the primary source of sand, which is usually obtained from existing sand dunes, does not meet the usual requirements, leading to poor quality end products. One important application of pneumatic transmission is in the operation of diaphragm actuators. These are the elements generally employed to drive the spindles of control valves (Section 7.22.3) and, if hard-wired transmission systems are employed, require devices which convert electric current into air pressure or air flowrate, i.e. electropneumatic (E/P) converters. The basic construction of a typical E/P converter is illustrated in Fig. 6.77. A coil is suspended in a magnetic field in such a way that when a current is passed through the coil it rotates. This rotation is sensed by a flapper/nozzle system (Section 7.22.1). The nozzle is supplied with air via a restrictor and its back pressure actuates a pneumatic relay. The output from the latter is applied to the feedback bellows and also acts as output from the E/P converter. Electropneumatic valve positioners employ the same principle of operation. [Pg.551]

Research began as an investigation of electrically induced ionic adsorption on porous "inert" electrodes. Electrode pairs based on carbon have been developed which will demineralize saline water at low voltage, and can be regenerated upon reversal of polarity. Various carbon electrodes have been conveniently classified into cation- and anion-responsive types. As received carbons are normally cation-responsive, but anion-responsive types have been made by chemical treatment. Laboratory demineralization cells based on this principle have been constructed and operated. Owing primarily to the low cost of basic construction materials, the process shows great promise for the economical conversion of saline waters. [Pg.209]
