Basic Alternatives

Better management of the evolution of the supply chain, we believe, can sustain a product s profitability and shorten reaction time to competitive moves. This is particularly applicable to quadrant A and quadrant B companies. Table 13.1 depicts the generic alternatives to supply chain organization, in what we will refer to as Baker Corp. [Pg.105]

If it is typical. Baker is likely to have a functional organization. Its procedures dictate that each product line be sourced, produced, and distributed the same way. Traditional functional departments make this happen. So, if it s typical. Baker is likely to be a company with a one-size-fits-all supply chain. [Pg.105]

Baker has two basic alternatives to the existing functional supply chain  [Pg.105]

In selecting an alternative, several market factors should be considered. [Pg.106]

Personal Computer Controller Because of its high performance at low cost and its unexcelled ease of use, apphcation of the personal computer (PC) as a platform for process controllers is growing. When configured to perform scan, control, alarm, and data acquisition (SCADA) functions and combined with a spreadsheet or database management apphcation, the PC controller can be a low-cost, basic alternative to the DCS or PLC. [Pg.776]

A method for the preparation of olefins from primary amines is shown in equation 120. Treatment of 2-(4-bromophenyl)ethylamine (358) with acetic acid, acetic anhydride and sodium nitrite generates the nitroso amide 359, which decomposes to 4-bromostyrene in the presence of rhodium(II) acetate. The procedure is thus a mild, non-basic alternative to the classical Hofmann elimination of amines396,397. [Pg.604]

It should be noted that when several m input streams with flowrates F are directed to the same process unit i, then there are two basic alternatives of writing the logical expressions. Alternative 1 is of the form ... [Pg.239]

Commercial products based on copolymers of ethylene and TEE are made by free radical-initiated addition copolymerization.69 Small amounts (1 to 10 mol%) of modifying comonomers are added to eliminate a rapid embrittlement of the product at exposure to elevated temperatures. Examples of the modifying comonomers are perfluorobutyl ethylene, hexafluoropropylene, perfluorovinyl ether, and hexafluoro-isobutylene.70 ETFE copolymers are basically alternating copolymers,70 and in the molecular formula, they are isomeric with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with a head-to-head, tail-to-tail structure. However, in many important physical properties, the modified ETFE copolymers are superior to PVDF with the exception of the latter s remarkable piezoelectric and pyroelectric characteristics. [Pg.25]

The typical problem is the separation of a ternary mixture ABC, with components ranked by decreasing volatility. Figure 3.6 shows two basic alternatives employing simple columns (one feed two products). In the direct sequence, the components... [Pg.75]

There are two basic alternative ways to use the photon energy to accomplish electron transfer between donors and acceptors. The first strategy involves deposition of energy into one of the components of the electron transfer system,... [Pg.6]

Three basic alternatives are available to make trans-bee oils for industrial frying as well as other uses. These are described below. [Pg.2005]

On contact with water a mildly basic stationary phase such as Polym-NMe2 yields a weakly ionized phase (Polym-NMe2H)+OH especially when the medium is basic. Alternately in an acidic medium it will appear as a strongly basic phase whose active surface will be strongly ionized (Polym-NMe2H)+CP. The exchange capacity of these resins varies with the pH. [Pg.97]

Some more basic alternatives of waste disposal are studied in some countries. Seabed disposal is one that attracts some attention in the United States and in Great Britain. The idea is to drill holes into the bottom of the deep sea that will be self-sealing after they have been filled with solidified waste. The water covering the disposal site will act as an additional barrier between waste and human beings. An obvious advantage of the seabed option is the very remote location. An obvious disadvantage is the complex and not at aU conventional technology required. [Pg.575]

In the simulations three basic alternatives of using an adiabatic fixed bed reactor for reduction-oxidation cycles (Fig. 1) were investigated. In the first alternative the flow... [Pg.480]

The fundamental incentive and concept of bioterrorism did not substantially change, up to these days. What did alter, obviously, are the know-how, the technical tools, and the strategic approach. Strategically, there are three basic alternatives shaping the concept of bioterrorism acts ... [Pg.1531]

Clays also play an important role in the mobility of the metals. Clays are basically alternating layers of Si and O tetrahedra, and A1 and O tetrahedra. Since oxygen charges are not entirely balanced, the particle has a net negative charge associated with it. Broken edges of the laminar... [Pg.478]

The terms hydrophilic and hydrophobic are more often used to describe the overall interactive character of a large molecule as opposed to the individual group interactions. Nevertheless they are basically alternative terms that have been adopted to describe a predominance of polar and dispersive interactive... [Pg.66]

For accident analysis or investigation applications, obviously the accident situation is to be compared to some comparable situation. There are three basic alternatives for this comparable situation. First, it can be the same operation or organization at an earlier point in time. For example, compare the personnel, procedures, plant and hardware, environment, tasks, and other factors at the time of the accident with these same factors as they were one hour (or day or week or year) before the accident. The selection of the comparable point in time depends upon the nature of the operation and the speed at which significant changes occurred. [Pg.213]

Equimolar amounts of p-nitrobenzaldehyde, methyl bromoacetate, BU3P, and Zn stirred at 100° for 7 h without solvent E-product. Y 94%. The method is a useful, non-basic, alternative to the Wittig route, and is applicable to aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic aldehydes use of 0.5 eq. Zn gave comparable (or better) yields. F.e. incl. 2,4-dienecarboxylic acid esters s. Y. Shen et al.. Tetrahedron Letters 29, 6119-20 (1988). [Pg.171]

This is of course similar in principle to what any engineer ends up doing at a lower level of a project. The important difference lies in the relationship with the owner, which has to be to some degree one of trust, in that the work to be done by the engineer (as for the project itself) is not yet defined. Thus the price for the work cannot realistically be set by a competitive process. The world of consulting engineers has many formulae to deal with this situation, but the basic alternatives are ... [Pg.251]

When we became seriously concerned about this problem (about 1985 ), it could not be convincingly decided which of these basic alternatives was correct (Hartree-Fock or X-ray), and it was not possible to proceed further. Subseqently, however, computers developed to the point where it became possible to carry out what are now considered modest quantum mechanical calculations directly on the nucleic acid base molecules. When this was done, it was found that the main problem did not lie in the molecular mechanics approximations themselves, nor did it lie in the experimental comparison of a crystal stracture with a gas-phase structure. Rather, the major problem... [Pg.126]

Zerdovich found for two reactions (hydrogen-chlorine and hydrogen-oxygen) the effect of the reaction mechanisms on the detonation velocity [530]. The first reaction follows a simple chain mechanism involving the basic alternating steps of the Nernst chain... [Pg.225]

There are three basic alternative routes to quantification, probably applicable to all forms of analysis (i) calculation of all the relevant terms from first principles (as in primary techniques such as NAA, NMR, etc.) (ii) the use of published databases and (Hi) the use of locally produced standards and local databases. In practice, a combination of the three approaches may often be most effective. In secondary techniques (which are the majority of analytical techniques) the instruments are calibrated against results obtained using other analytical methods. Precision and accuracy obtained are then limited by those of the primary techniques. [Pg.601]
