Surface Finish. As well as influencing the rate of metal removal, electrolytes also affect the quality of surface finish obtained in ECM. Depending on the metal being machined, some electrolytes leave an etched finish. This finish results from the nonspecular reflection of light from crystal faces electrochemicaHy dissolved at different rates. Sodium chloride electrolyte tends to produce a kind of etched, matte finish when used for steels and nickel aHoys. A typical surface roughness average, Ra is about 1 ]lni. [Pg.308]

Of the 25% share of coal in world primary energy supply, hard coal makes up around 90% (BGR, 2007). Owing to its high calorific value, the main use of hard coal is for electricity generation (60% of world hard coal production), 16% is used for steel making, and the rest in other industries and households. While in the EU25 around one third of the electricity is produced by (hard) coal, this share amounts to 50% in the United States, 70% in India, 80% in China, 85% in Australia, 90% in South Africa and 93% in Poland. [Pg.102]

EARS [Enhanced acid regeneration system] A process for recovering hydrochloric acid from the ERMS ilmenite beneficiation process. It may be used also for recovering waste pickle liquor. The acid liquor containing ferrous chloride is evaporated at low temperature to form iron chloride pellets, which are fed to a pyrohydrolysis reactor. This generates hydrochloric acid and iron oxide pellets, which can be used for steel production or disposed of as inert landfill. Developed by E. A. Walpole at the University of Newcastle, Australia, from the early 1990s and piloted by Austpac Gold (now Austpac Resources). [Pg.88]

The properties of the interface metal/solution. Cast iron corrodes because of exposure of its graphite to the surface (graphitic corrosion), which is cathodic to both low-alloy and mild steels. Hence, in aggressive media, valve bodies are frequently chosen of steel rather than cast iron. Modeling fretting corrosion. An equation has been used for steel to evaluate the loss of weight W caused by fretting corrosion based on a model that combines the chemical and mechanical effect of the corrosion by fretting. The chemical factor concerns the oxidation that occurs at the time of wear, corresponding to adsorption of oxygen to form the oxide. The liner plate lining of the underside of a concrete cover does not offer permanent protection. For one thing, there is no membrane between the liner plates and the concrete-only the layer of hot asphalt over the mortar joints. The liner plates are not as dense as, have a higher absorption than, acid brick-6% allowable-and they are thinner than acid brick, The absorption testing of liner plates is accomplished under ASTM C-301-by no means as stringent a test as that used for acid brick. Consequently, the economical life of this kind of a cover is limited. In vessels handling ambient temperature wastes, the cover may last a number of years. But if the vessel operates at an elevated temperature and contains a volatile corrosive such as hydrochloric acid, tile may start falling off in less than a year. In the past the only alternative was the same kind of covers used for steel tanks. [Pg.262]
