Amyl acetate butyrate

Esters of medium volatility are capable of removing the water formed by distillation. Examples are propyl, butyl, and amyl formates, ethyl, propyl, butyl, and amyl acetates, and the methyl and ethyl esters of propionic, butyric, and valeric acids. In some cases, ternary azeotropic mixtures of alcohol, ester, and water are formed. This group is capable of further subdivision with ethyl acetate, all of the ester is removed as a vapor mixture with alcohol and part of the water, while the balance of the water accumulates in the system. With butyl acetate, on the other hand, all of the water formed is removed overhead with part of the ester and alcohol, and the balance of the ester accumulates as a high boiler in the system.

Successful results have been obtained (Renfrow and Chaney, 1946) with ethyl formate methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, n-butyl, i o-butyl, sec.-butyl and iso-amyl acetates ethylenegl3rcol diacetate ethyl monochloro- and trichloro-scetates methyl, n-propyl, n-octyl and n-dodecyl propionates ethyl butyrate n-butyl and n-amyl valerates ethyl laurate ethyl lactate ethyl acetoacetate diethyl carbonate dimethyl and diethyl oxalates diethyl malonate diethyi adipate di-n-butyl tartrate ethyl phenylacetate methyl and ethyl benzoates methyl and ethyl salicylates diethyl and di-n-butyl phthalates. The method fails for vinyl acetate, tert.-butyl acetate, n-octadecyl propionate, ethyl and n-butyl stearate, phenyl, benzyl- and g aicol-acetate, methyl and ethyl cinnamate, diethyl sulphate and ethyl p-aminobenzoate. 

Preschool children are reputed to differ from adults in their odor preferences. For instance children aged 3-4 years were as likely to like the odor of amyl acetate (banana) as synthetic sweat or feces odors. By 6 years of age, their preferences resembled adults, liking banana, and disliking sweaty and fecal odors (Stein et al., 1958). At 4-5 years of age, a shift occurs from positive or neutral to negative characterization of odors of sweat, feces, asa foetida, or butyric acid. However, it is increasingly becoming clear that responses by very young children... 

Another potentially important fermentation is that producing butyric acid. The process is used industrially on only a small scale at present and details have not been disclosed. Many derivatives of butyric acid are used industrially the benzyl, methyl, octyl and terpenyl esters are used in the perfumery and essence trade and amyl butyrate, bornyl and isobornyl butyrates have been described as plasticizers for cellulose esters. Moreover vinyl butyrate is a possible ingredient of polymerizable materials. The mixed acetic and butyric acid esters of polysaccharides are also coming into favor. Cellulose acetate butyrate is marketed as an ingredient of lacquer and is less inflammable than the pure acetate. Dextran (see below) acetate butyrate may have similar uses. 

Objects molded from classic ABS or ASA copolymers are generally severely attacked by numerous chemical products, such as acids like acetic acid, butyric acid, and nitric acid, phthalates like dioctyl phthalate, gasoline, greases, inks, iodine, alcohols like methanol, motor oils, phenols, glycols, tetrachloroethylene, and acetates like ethyl acetate, amyl acetate, and others (29). 

Marqueyrol and Florentin point out that the lower members of the series of esters, the acetates, butyrates, valerates, etc., are good solvents for nitrocellulose—ethyl and amyl acetate have long been used for the purpose—but the higher members, the stearates and oleates, gelatinize nitrocellulose but very little. To the esters of the dibasic acids the opposite rule appears to apply the higher members are better than the lower. Acetone is a well-known solvent both for soluble and for insoluble nitrocellulose, but acetophenone gelatinizes even soluble nitrocellulose only feebly.
