Ethyl-2- propionate

Ethyl propionate is a colorless liquid with an odor resembling that of pineapples. It is a solvent for cellulose ethers and esters and for a variety of natural and synthetic resins. It is used principally as an ingredient in soft drinks and fruit syrups. [Pg.832]

Below about 300 °C the main products of combustion are acetic acid and propionaldehyde together with some propionic and formic acids and acetaldehyde. At about 400 °C, there is much more acetaldehyde than propionaldehyde and the yield of propionic acid exceeds that of acetic acid [95]. [Pg.476]

The formation of acyloins (a-hydroxyketones of the general formula RCH(OH)COR, where R is an aliphatic residue) proceeds best by reaction between finely-divided sodium (2 atoms) and esters of aliphatic acids (1 mol) in anhydrous ether or in anhydrous benzene with exclusion of oxygen salts of enediols are produced, which are converted by hydrolysis into acyloins. The yield of acetoin from ethyl acetate is low (ca. 23 per cent, in ether) owing to the accompanying acetoacetic ester condensation the latter reaction is favoured when the ester is used as the solvent. Ethyl propionate and ethyl ji-butyrate give yields of 52 per cent, of propionoin and 72 per cent, of butyroin respectively in ether. [Pg.1080]

The stoichiometric and the catalytic reactions occur simultaneously, but the catalytic reaction predominates. The process is started with stoichiometric amounts, but afterward, carbon monoxide, acetylene, and excess alcohol give most of the acrylate ester by the catalytic reaction. The nickel chloride is recovered and recycled to the nickel carbonyl synthesis step. The main by-product is ethyl propionate, which is difficult to separate from ethyl acrylate. However, by proper control of the feeds and reaction conditions, it is possible to keep the ethyl propionate content below 1%. Even so, this is significantly higher than the propionate content of the esters from the propylene oxidation route. [Pg.155]

A modification of the K-R reaction was introduced by Mozingo. This method involved reacting an o-hydroxyacetophenone with an ester in the presence of metallic sodium to form a 1,3-diketone. Treatment of the diketone with an acid then delivered the chromone via an intramolecular cyclization reaction. This method was applied to the preparation of 2-ethylchromone (21). 0-hydroxyarylketone 22 was allowed to react with ethyl propionate (23) in the presence of sodium metal. The resulting sodium enolate was then quenched with acetic acid to deliver the 1,3-diketone 24. Upon heating 24 in glacial acetic acid and hydrochloric acid, 2-ethylchromone (21) was delivered in 70-75% overall yield. [Pg.524]
