Amyl salicylate

Amyl Salicylate.—All the perfumes of the orchid type, and many of the Trifle variety, have amyl salicylate as one of their most important bases. The ester is known under the names orchid e, trefle or trefoil, and artificial orchid essence. It is used to a considerable extent in artificial perfumery. It is a colourless liquid of the formula... [Pg.167]

Jermy (15) has emphasized the Importance of allomones in the host plant selection process. Although the ovlpositional and phagostimulative kalromones do not appear to be sufficient to account for host specificity by M. sexta in the host plant selection process, the mere avoidance of allomones does not appear to be sufficient either. Rather, the presence of a detectable allomone is sufficient to account for non-selection of a potential host plant. For example, given a choice between esculentum and any other suitable host plant M. sexta moths select 1. excu-lentum (16). No allomones are Involved To account for this preference, the presence of volatile orientation factor(s) may be Involved. In fact, Morgan and Lyon ( ) Isolated amyl salicylate from the host plant Datura stromonlum as an orientation factor for gravid female moths. We have also shown that an orientation factor is present in the steam distillate of esculentum leaves. [Pg.256]

One of the earliest perfumery materials to be produced industrially was benzaldehyde, prepared from toluene in 1866. In 1868 coumarin was first synthesized, soon to be followed by heliotropin, ionone, and vanillin. The first nitro musks appeared in 1888, and amyl salicylate in 1898. Since then, for the last hundred years, the history of perfumery has been dominated by the creation of new aromatic chemicals. [Pg.5]

Moment Supreme, in combination with jasmin, rose, eugenol, clove, coumarin, and vetiveryl acetate, and with oakmoss in fougeres such as Fougere Royal, and Canoe. Few of these perfumes have survived in their original form, and amyl salicylate has largely fallen out of favor as a major structural component in fine perfumery, its place having been taken by the more elegant c/.s-3-hexenyl salicylate. [Pg.103]

The mellis accord, which makes up an important part of the fragrance here incorporates amyl salicylate in addition to benzyl salicylate, with the patchouli and woody aspect being accentuated, using cedryl acetate rather than the more traditional products derived from vetiver. Vertofix had yet to be discovered. The dominant spices, in combination with eugenol, are clove and cinnamon. [Pg.119]

In detergent perfumes, the stability of vanillin is not always certain. It depends on the association made with other raw materials, eg, with patchouli, frankincense, cloves, most of the animal notes, and such chemicals as amyl salicylate, methyl ionones, heliotropin, gamma undecalactone, linalool, methyl anthranilate, benzyl acetate, phenyl ethyl alcohol, cedar wood derivatives, oak mosses, coumarin, benzoin, Pem balsam, and cistus derivatives.
