Several ester enolates have also been examined by X-ray crystallography. The enolates of /-butyl propionate and /-butyl 3-methylpropionate were obtained as TMEDA solvates of enolate dimers. The enolate of methyl 3,3-dimethylbutanoate was obtained as a THF-solvated tetramer.

The (/ ,/ )-A, 7V -bis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phcnylsulfonyl]-l.2-dipheny]-l,2-ethanediaminc also furnishes <7 t/-/(-hydroxy esters with high induced stereoselectivity64. For this purpose, the bromide generated from 10 and tribromoborane is reacted with tm-butyl propanoate in the presence of triethylamine to deliver the (A )-enolate. The subsequent addition to aldehydes gives predominantly tOT/ -/)-hydroxy esters (anti/syn 94 6 to 99 1) of 75 to 97 % ee. The diastereose-lectivity can be improved when, instead of /erf-butyl propionate, the corresponding ( + )-men-thyl ester is used64. 

The Andersen sulphoxide synthesis allows one also to synthesize a variety of a-heteroatom substituted sulphoxides starting from a-heteroatom stabilized carbanions and (—)-(S)-276. The selected examples shown in Scheme 3 are the best illustration of the generality of this approach. The reaction of enolates or enolate like species with (—)-(S)-276 has been used for the synthesis of optically active a-carbalkoxy sulphoxides. For example, treatment of (—)-(S)-276 with the halogenomagnesium enolates of -butyl acetate, t-butyl propionate or t-butyl butyrate resulted in the formation of ( + )-(R)-t-butyl p-toluenesulphinylcarboxylates 298367 (equation 163). 

A mild and efficient a-heteroarylation of simple esters and amides via nucleophilic aromatic substitution has been described <06OL1447>. Treatment of 2-chloro-benzo[//Jthiazole 99 with tert-butyl propionate in the presence of NaHMDS under nitrogen furnishes tert-butyl 2-(benzo[c(jthiazol-2-yl)propanoate 100. When the same reaction is preformed initially under nitrogen and then exposed to air, the hydroxylation product 101 is obtained.
