Two bladder papillomas and three bladder carcinomas were observed in six dogs fed a total of 5.5-7g (l.Omg/kg, 5 days/week for life). Immunocyanin is an effective medicine for the treatment of urinary bladder carcinoma. It is derived from a sea snail protein. The instillation of immunocyanin into the bladder results in a marked immuno-stimulation of macrophages and hence a specific immune response against mmour cells that are still in the bladder after cancer therapy.

End-stage renal disease is treated with dialysis and kidney transplantation. Hypertension and cardiovascular diseases affect the Balkan nephropathy patients less frequently, so they tolerate hemodialysis rather well compared to patients with other renal diseases. The Balkan nephropathy patients on long-term hemodialysis frequenfly develop upper urothelial or urinary bladder carcinoma.

Cultured human urinary bladder carcinoma cells treated with doxycycline and UVA showed mitochondrial damage. Cell membrane integrity was maintained for several hours after mitochondrial damage appeared, indicating that the mitochondrion is an earlier target of doxycycline than the cell membrane when irradiated with UVA. Adherent EJ urinary bladder carcinoma cells (see Note 7) are cultured routinely in RPMI-1640 medium supplemented with 10% FBS and L-glutamine and reset by hot trypsiniza-tion two or three times per week. For the experiments, only recently established cultures can be used advisably before the seventh passage. 

The procedure assumes the use of EJ urinary bladder carcinoma, but it is fiilly applicable for other adherent cell lines too, given the specific cell culture and maintenance requirements are met.
