Additional incident information can be collected and statistics created from the perspective of timeframe (day of week, time of day, month of year), the type of unit operation (manufacturing plant, supply chain, transportation), the state of operation (normal, startup, shutdown, other), or different cause types (faulty equipment design, corrosion, failure to follow procedure, etc.). This can create a number of additional metrics. X...

The most critical research used what is known as the case-control method. Drivers in a sample of real-life injury crashes were tested for blood alcohol concentration. Then, at the same times of day and days of week, and under the same weather conditions, many drivers were stopped at the sites of each of the case crashes and asked to provide a breath sample. The blood alcohol levels of the normal (no-crash) drivers were compared with those involved in casualty crashes to compute the risks of a casualty crash as a function of the blood alcohol level. The results from the United States and Australia are remarkably similar. Setting the risk of a crash at zero blood alcohol level as 1, the risk at 0.05 BAC was 2, and it exponentially increased until the risk at 0.15 BAC was many orders of magnitude greater. 

For each case crash, the team then obtained 10 controls (830 in total). They went to each case crash location at the same time of day on the same day of week and under the same weather conditions as the case crash and measured the free speed of 10 vehicles travelling in the same direction as the crash vehicle. They stopped these drivers farther down the road and sought breath samples to eliminate any alcohol influence. 

Inspections are snapshots in time. The time of day, day of week, and work activity at the time of the inspection will determine the findings, which could vary greatly from one point to another.
