Little information is available on the enzymatic hydrolysis of xylan. The kinetics of breakdown of xylan are reported.128 Hemicellulose from linden wood is said to be extensively hydrolyzed124 by the digestive juices of Helix pomatia. Xylanase128 of Aspergillus niger, while active on xylan between pH 2-8, has its optimum at pH 4.0.

In 1847 E. Harless discovered the presence of copper in the blood of the octopus Eledone and the snail Helix pomatia (172, 173). Investigation of the phenomenon by which the blood and tissues of certain marine animals turn blue on exposure to air finally led to the discovery that the blood plasma of such animals contains copper combined with a protein. Because of its analogy to hemoglobin and its ability to carry oxygen, L. Fredericq in 1878 named the copper-containing protein in the blood of Octopus vulgaris hemocyanin (173, 174). 

Sephacryl (allyldextran cross-linked by N,N -methylenebisacrylamide) are the two types of dextran gel used in separation. Sephadex is mainly used as a glucose pol)rmer and employed for purification of many molecules such as lectins from Helix pomatia and Viciafaba, exoamylase from Pseudomonas stutzeri [14]. 

For the modification of the gold surface different chemical and biological substances (dodecanethiol, lectins, dextran sulfate DS, with the mass of 5 kDa and polyelectrolytes) were used. The mercaptane layer was formed in ethanol atlO" M concentration of thiol. Polyaniline hydrochloride (PAH), Aldrich , USA, was used to cover the transducer surface by a water insoluble polymer. Lectins from Phaseolus vulgaris (PLA), Solanum tuberosum (STA), Helix pomatia (HPA) and Tuberosum vulgaris (WGA) were immobilized on the surface pre-treated with dodecanethiol or PAH. These lectins were used for the immobilization of glycoproteins. Blocking of the free binding sites was carried out with 1% bovine serum albumin (BSA). 

Liquid samples such as urine, plasma, bile, or milk are normally incubated in the presence of -glucuronidase/sulfatase at 37 C for 2 h to deconjugate glucuronide and sulfate conjugates of the analytes (427-430). The most common preparation for this purpose is the juice of the snail Helix pomatia, which has sulfatase and glucuronidase activity. In some instances, dilution of urine with water (431), or dilution of plasma with phosphate buffer and centrifugation (432), may constitute the only pretreatment procedure applied. 

The enzymatic hydrolysis is the method of choice when undesired reactions are to be avoided. /Tglucosidases (or /J-glucuronidases) from Helix pomatia digestive juice are now commercially available. They usually show a good hydrolytic performance, even if sometimes need long time reactions (days). Other enzymes are reported to have been used to specifically hydrolize saccharidic bonds like hesperidinase, /J-xylosidase, j3-galactosidase, and mixed crude enzymes like cellulase. 

When the lipid composition of the ganglion in four species of gastropod (Helix pomatia, Lymnaea stagnate, Murex trunculus, and M. brandaris the last two species inhabit the sea) was investigated by biochemical and histochemical methods, the glycosphingolipids were found to be present mainly in the form of sulfatides, whereas gangliosides are absent.60...

Barry114 isolated a disaccharide, laminaribiose, on the partial hydrolysis of laminarin by enzymes (digestive juice of the snail Helix pomatia or H. aspersa) or by acid (seven hours with N oxalic acid on the water-bath). He showed that this disaccharide consisted solely of D-glucose and considered it to be 3-j3-D-glucopyranosyl-D-glucopyranose (XXIX).
