Starting small

This process could be used to hold people accountable for numerous behaviors or behavioral outcomes. It is quite analogous to the standard environmental audit conducted throughout industrial complexes to survey equipment conditions, environmental hazards, and the availability of emergency supplies. Actually, most equipment and enviroiunental audits reflect behaviors. An equipment guard in place, a tool appropriately sharpened, a work area neat and clean, and equipment power locked out properly are in that safe condition because of employees behaviors. A behavior auditor might look for an SBO regarding any number of safe environmental conditions. When they see an opportunity for the safe target behavior to have occurred, they take out their CBC and record safe or at risk to indicate objectively whether the desired safe behavior(s) had occurred to make the condition safe. [Pg.149]

In this chapter we have gotten into the nuts and bolts of implementing a behavior-based safety process to develop a Total Safety Culture. The overall process is referred to as DO IT, each letter representing one of the four stages of behavior-based safety. This chapter focused on the first two stages—Define and Observe. [Pg.151]

Over time and through building trust, a short CBC can be readily expanded and lead to one-on-one safety coaching. Safety coaching is one very effective way to implement each stage of the DO IT process and is detailed in Chapter 12. First, it is important to understand how the first two stages of DO IT can facilitate a proper behavioral analysis of the situation. [Pg.151]

Care should be taken in decomposing the hydroperoxide. If the temperature is kept too low, decomposition takes place too slowly and hydroperoxide may accumulate. Heat is liberated during the decomposition, and after each small addition the temperature will rise. At the start, small amounts of hydroperoxide are added until the temperature rises above 15° the rate is then adjusted to keep the temperature in the range 15-25°. The rise in temperature after each small addition is the best evidence that decomposition is actually taking place. [Pg.78]

Reactor production rate depends on average reaction rate and the fraction of the time the reactor is not operating. With a batch reactor the reaction rate starts small, increases to a rather constant value, sometimes increases further to a maximum, and then decreases rapidly as the monomer concentration falls. [Pg.9]

Sushi, the thousand-year-old Japanese delicacy, started small in the United States, in a handful of restaurants in big cities. Today, sushi consumption in America is 50% greater than it was ten years ago and not just in restaurants. Sushi is also sold at concession stands in sports stadiums, university dining halls, and in supermarkets throughout the country. [Pg.65]

A. There has been an attempt in the bill to recognize the disabilities, the extra burdens, on the small inventor in that there is a provision which says that for an individual inventor, or those who meet the definition of a small business as defined in our laws, there is an upper limit on the filing and issuance fees of the patent. That upper limit is 100. That same clause says that there will be a minimum lower limit of 200 for the corporate applicant. Now that difference does not solve the question that you raised, but it is as far as the sponsors of the bill are apparently willing to go. I think that when associations of big business tell the government that they are worried about how this is going to help or hurt the small inventor, they don t receive much attention. It isn t remembered that most big business started small. [Pg.26]

Adults-2 to 5 mg orally twice daily. Start small or emaciated patients on the lower dosage. Most patients will show optimum response with 15 or 20 mg/day, although a few may require 40 mg/day or more. Optimum therapeutic dosage levels should be reached within 2 or 3 weeks. [Pg.1119]

You are probably well aware that the pressures at great depths under the ocean are extremely large, and the deeper you go, the greater the pressure that is exerted. Let s start small and look at a beaker filled with water. The beaker has a diameter of 10 cm, and the height of the water is 20 cm. How much pressure does the water exert on the bottom of the beaker To answer this question we simply need to recall that P = FI A. The force involved is the weight of the water contained in the beaker. The weight of the water can be calculated from the mass of the water, and the mass of the water can be calculated from the volume, using density as a conversion factor. [Pg.106]

Because the supply of new oil must start small and grow with demand, it is useful to find some low-volume, high-value products that will support the crop through its early years of development until the supply is adequate to be used for high-volume, low-value products. [Pg.295]

And if you ask me why the government wants us to live in villages, the answer is just as simple unless we do we shall not be able to provide ourselves with the things we need to develop our land and to raise our standard of living. We shall not be able to use tractors we shall not be able to provide schools for our children we shall not be able to build hospitals, or have clean drinking water it will be quite impossible to start small village industries, and instead we shall have to go on depending on the towns for all our requirements and if we had a plentiful supply of electric power we should never be able to connect it up to each isolated homestead. ... [Pg.230]

To obtain an as mimetrical flow, as observed for real cases, particular flow perturbations are generally introduced for a short time period as the flow develops in time from the start. Small jets at the bottom are often used for this purpose. [Pg.928]

Stokes s scheme is particularly interesting, because much of contemporary science is firmly in Pasteur s quadrant. As stated by Guston and Keniston, much of the federal funding for science is based on the expectation that research will provide useful products and processes. Increasingly, research proposals are judged on the potential applicability of the results and university scientists are encouraged to apply for patents and start small companies to commercialize their discoveries. Many of the ethical tensions in contemporary science are a result of the emphasis on doing research in Pasteur s quadrant. [Pg.165]

Establish the need and demand for a repositoiy in quantitative terms. This essentially describes the inventory of wastes to be disposed of. This should be as specific as possible since uncertainty will be interpreted as deviousness. It rrray be preferable to start small with a well-defined waste inventory and do a good job with that than to try to be all things to all people and never get started at all. [Pg.224]

The best way to interpret these temperature values is to follow the reaction and its morphological features. At the start, small molecules exist in solution at the operating temperature of 100 C. With the presence of the free-radical initiator (such as AIBN), initiation events take place to form oligomers (short polymer chains at molecular weights below around 10,000 g/mol). In fact, in this case. [Pg.125]

Choose goals that will make a difference but that are actually achievable with the resources you have, people power and money. Goals should be measurable. There should be short-term goals, which will give the organization positive reinforcement and credibility, as well as more ambitious long-term goals. Start small and work your way up. [Pg.174]

Finding a leak in an underground pipe system is often difficult because the leak may start small and go undetected for a period of time. Once the leak is so severe that water is literally coming from the ground, it may cause a local flood. In addition to the lost water, the damage can be significant and the repair work is more than what would have been needed to fix a small leak [2]. [Pg.263]

Foot-in-the-door start small and build. This strategy follows directly from the commitment and consistency principle. To be consistent, a person who follows a small request... [Pg.377]

This "foot-in-the-door" technique only works when people go along with the first small request. If a person says "No" right away, he or she might find it even easier to resist subsequent, more important requests. So, if your first call for actively caring behavior is shot down, you did not start small enough. Be prepared to retreat to something less demanding and build reciprocity from there. [Pg.379]

The interpersonal influence principles of reciprocity and commitment-consistency were introduced as they apply to our everyday decisions and behaviors. The commitment and consistency principle is behind the success of safe behavior promise cards, the foot-in-the-door technique ("start small and build"), and throwing a curve ball ("raise the stakes later"). These principles and specific strategies can be applied to directly boost actively caring behaviors. [Pg.382]
