Care should be taken in decomposing the hydroperoxide. If the temperature is kept too low, decomposition takes place too slowly and hydroperoxide may accumulate. Heat is liberated during the decomposition, and after each small addition the temperature will rise. At the start, small amounts of hydroperoxide are added until the temperature rises above 15° the rate is then adjusted to keep the temperature in the range 15-25°. The rise in temperature after each small addition is the best evidence that decomposition is actually taking place. 

Both the wood-based panel industry and the adhesive industry show a high commitment to and great capability towards innovation. The best evidence for this is the considerable diversity of types of adhesives used for the production of wood-based panels. Well-known basic chemicals have been used for a long time for the production of the adhesives and their resins, the most important ones being formaldehyde, urea, melamine, phenol, resorcinol and isocyanate. The greater portion of the currently used adhesive resins and adhesives for wood-based panels is produced with these few raw materials. The how to cook the resins and the how to formulate the adhesive become more and more complicated and sophisticated and are key factors to meet today s requirements of the wood-based panel industry.

Some of the best evidence of links between effects at different organizational levels comes from studies with OPs, where levels of AChE inhibition have been compared with associated neurophysiological and behavioral effects. In adopting this approach, however, the picture is complicated by mounting evidence for these compounds acting on target sites other than AChE, as discussed in Section 16.3. Thus, behavioral disturbances caused by an OP may be the outcome of interaction with both AChE and one or more other sites of action. The following account, however, will be concerned with situations where effects of OPs are closely related to levels of AChE inhibition. More complex scenarios will be discussed in the next section. 

Other recent and very compelling evidence that the P subunit may also be necessary for full activity [83] comes from the study of a high threshold but DHP-insen-sitive brain channel that has an a 1-like channel core. The cDNA for this brain channel was recently isolated and the mRNA was expressed in Xenopus oocytes. The current corresponding to this channel was increased when the mRNA for either the skeletal muscle 0.2 or P subunits were co-injected. However, when the brain ai-like mRNA was co-expressed with the combination of the skeletal muscle 2 and p mRNAs, the current was dramatically increased from 31 nA for the brain ai alone to 6 500nA for the combination [83]. At the present time it is difficult to single out any one factor that could be held ultimately responsible for cell death after cerebral ischaemia. Recent studies, however, have provided us with sufficient evidence to conclude that free radical damage is at least one component in a chain of events that leads to cell death in ischaemia/reperfiision injury. As noted earlier in this review, much of the evidence for free radicals in the brain and the sources of free radicals come from studies in animals subjected to cerebral ischaemia. Perhaps the best evidence for a role for free radicals or reactive oxygen species in cerebral ischaemia is derived from studies that demonstrate protective effects of antioxidants. Antioxidants and inhibitors of lipid peroxidation have been shown to have profound protective effects in models of cerebral ischaemia. Details of some of these studies will be mentioned later. Several reviews have been written on the role of oxygen radicals in cerebral ischaemia (Braughler and HaU, 1989 Hall and Btaughler, 1989 Kontos, 1989 Floyd, 1990 Nelson ef /., 1992 Panetta and Clemens, 1993). 

Because the WHI is the best evidence to date linking HRT with breast cancer, women with a personal history of breast cancer and possibly even a strong family history of breast cancer should avoid the use of HRT and consider non-hormonal alternatives for the treatment of vasomotor symptoms. 

Overall, non-hormonal therapies are less effective in treating vasomotor symptoms than HRT but do offer an important option for women experiencing menopausal symptoms who cannot or are unwilling to take HRT. The antidepressants gabapentin and clonidine have the best evidence for efficacy of all the non-hormonal options and should be considered first as an alternative to HRT. The most important considerations in choosing an alternative therapy are the patient s comorbidities and the efficacy and safety of the medication.
