Sodium phenol sulfonate

Analyses for amino acid composition were performed according to the method of Spademan, Stein and Moore (8). Samples were hydrolyzed for 24 hr at 110°C in 6 N HCl containing 2% phenol and 1% 2-mercaptoethanol. All analyses were performed on a Beckman 6300 amino acid analyzer with a sodium polystyrene sulfonated cation exchange column (Pickering Laboratories). [Pg.877]

Sodium phenol-4-sulfonate (2H2O) (4-hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid Na salt) [825-90-1] M 232.2. Crystd from hot water (ImL/g) by cooling to 0°, or from MeOH, and dried in vacuum. [Pg.474]

Phenols, Sec. 24.7, are more acidic than water, but—with certain exceptions— are considerably weaker than carboxylic acids they dissolve in aqueous sodium hydroxide, but not in aqueous sodium bicarbonate. Sulfonic acids are even more acidic than carboxylic acids, but they contain sulfur, which can be detected by elemental analysis.)... [Pg.608]

The complex batch reaction between formaldehyde, A, and sodium p-phenol sulfonate, B, proceeds in accordance with the following complex reaction scheme. All the reactions follow second-order kinetics. Components C, D and F are intermediates, and E is the final product. [Pg.290]

Although the price of phenol has fallen considerably since the war, a fact indicating largely the efficiency of the newer process of chlorbenzene hydrolysis, and also due to improvements in the sulfonation of benzeue and the fusion of sodium benzene sulfonate, it is possible that the ideal process of direct oxidation may yet be developed to give a still lower price. A price lower than the present should stimulate further the already large demand for phenol and for its reaction products such as resins, and even open up new fields for use, a possibility of great promise in the case of synthetic resins. [Pg.374]

This formulation has excellent wetting, detergent, rinsing and foaming properties. It is recommended as a medium duty cleaner for truck bodies, floor scrubs, wax strippers, etc. This product is clear from -5C to 70C. This formula would require approximately 4 times as much sodium xylene sulfonate as the amount of Monateric CEM-36 used to achieve clarity. Other nonionic ethoxy-lates, such as those based on primary alcohol or alkyl phenol may... [Pg.200]

Typical enulsifiers used in emulsion polymerization of VC are anirmic emulsifiers like sodium alkyl sulfonates, sodium diaUcyl sulfosucdnates, fatty acid soaps and sodium ethoxy sulfates. Neutral emulsifiers like alltyl phenol ethoxylates and fatty acid ethoxylates are often added during after polymerization in Oder b> increase latex stability. The emulsifiers are not only chosen for control of the particle formation and latex stability during polymerization, but for a number of other reasons like mechanical stability, reactor wall build-up, plastisol formation, heat and colour stability and water resistance of the final product [1]. [Pg.715]

The solid-liquid alkaline hydrolysis of esters such as phenyl benzoate, ethyl p-nitrobenzoate and 2,4-dichlorophenylbenzoate has been studied in the presence of sodium p-toluene sulfonate, sodium xylene sulfonate and the sodium salts of phenol, p-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. The solubilities of the esters in water is very low, but in the presence of the hydrotropes considerably higher reaction rates are obtained due to higher solubilities (30). The same behaviour was observed by using urea in the solid-liquid oximation of cyclododecanone where the reaction rate was increased. From studies of these types of reactions, the following observations were made (31) ... [Pg.417]

Charles Adolphe Wurtz and August Kekule further improved the process in 1867. The sulfonation route was developed to technical maturity in particular by Bayer and Monsanto. The first stage in the synthesis is the sulfonation of benzene with sulfuric add, generally using a 100% excess of sulfuric acid. In the second stage, the sulfonation product is neutralized with sodium hydroxide or sodium sulfite. The resulting benzenesulfonate, in solid form or as a concentrated aqueous solution, is heated with sodium hydroxide at temperatures of 320 to 340 °C, in cast-iron pans. The alkaline sodium phenolate solution is neutralized ( saturated ) with CO2 or, in the Monsanto process, with SO2. When the water has been distilled off substantially pure phenol with a crystallizing point of 40.5 °C is obtained. [Pg.152]
