The paraffin sulfonate melt from the bottoms of the thin film evaporator is mixed with water, cooled, and bleached with hydrogen peroxide (9). The wastewater of the production plant (about 0.25 m3/100 kg paraffin sulfonate) shows a COD of 2100 mg/L. Because of the good biodegradability of the dissolved matter, it can be purified in a sewage treatment plant without difficulty [8].

A wide range of anionic surfactants (Fig. 23) has been classified into groups, including alkyl benzene sulfonates (ABS), linear alkyl benzene sulfonates (LAS), alcohol sulfates (AS), alcohol ether sulfates (AES), alkyl phenol ether sulfates (APES), fatty acid amide ether sulfates (FAES), alpha-olefin sulfates (AOS), paraffin sulfonates, alpha sulfonated fatty acids and esters, sulfonated fatty acids and esters, mono- and di-ester sulfosuccinates, sulfosuccinamates, petroleum sulfonates, phosphate esters, and ligno-sulfonates. Of the anionic surfactants, ABS and LAS continue to be the major products of anionic surfactants [314, 324]. Anionic surfactants have been extensively monitored and characterized in various environmental matrices [34,35,45,325-329].

This brings up the important point that the choice of counterion is also key for efficacy of the main anionic surfactants used in the cleaning formula. It has been known for some time that divalent metal salts of alkylbenzene sulfonate, paraffin sulfonates, and the like are better grease cleaners than the analogous sodium salts [87,88], These are more difficult to use due to their lower water stability, but they can be formulated with some of the more effective grease cutting solvents [89-90]. It has also been claimed that if ammonium salts of the anionic surfactants are used less residue is left on the surface [91]. 

The broadest spectrum disinfection, at a low price, is delivered by bleach, which is often a compensating factor for the difficulty of formulation. Formulation with bleach usually prevents the use of most common nonionics, paraffin sulfonates, alkylbenzene sulfonates, betaines, long-chain unsaturated quats, etc. The surfactants most often used with hypochlorite bleach are amine oxides, soaps,...
