Sodium arsanilate

Chemically synthesized antimicrobials used in animal and poultry feeds include arsenicals, eg, arsanilic acid [98-50-0] sodium arsanilate [127-85-5] and roxarsone [121-19-7]-, sulfa dmgs, eg, sulfadimethoxine [122-11-2], sulfamethazine [57-68-1], and sulfathiazole [72-14-0]-, carbadox [6804-07-5]-, and nitrofurans, eg, furazoHdone [67 5-8] and nitrofurazone [59-87-0] (see Antibacterial agents, synthetic Antiparasitic agents). [Pg.410]

Various phenylarsonic acids — especially arsanilic acid, sodium arsanilate, and 3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid—have been used as feed additives for disease control and for improvement of weight gain in swine and poultry for almost 40 years (NAS 1977). The arsenic is present as As+5... [Pg.1529]

The introduction of the arsinic acid group into the aromatic nucleus is of great interest in connexion with the therapeutic application of arsenic compounds in combating certain infectious diseases (atoxyl = sodium arsanilate salvorsan). [Pg.295]

The medicinal use of arsenic compounds is now very limited, but some are still used in human trypanosomiasis. The effect of heterocyclic groups in reducing toxicity is well shown in the trypanocide melarsoprol (Mel B) (263), in which the severe toxicity of sodium arsanilate (atoxyl) has been reduced successively by substitution with a triazine residue and incorporation of the arsenic atom in a heterocycle. [Pg.181]

The toxicity of a given arsenical is related to the rate of its clearance from the body and therefore to its degree of accumulation in tissues. In general, toxicity increases in the sequence of organic arsenicals arsenicals contain arsenic covalently linked to a carbon atom, where arsenic exists in the trivalent or pentavalent state. Arsphenamine contains trivalent arsenic sodium arsanilate contains arsenic in the pentavalent form. The organic arsenicals usually are excreted more rapidly than are the inorganic forms. [Pg.1138]

Various phenylarsoiuc acids - especially arsanilic acid, sodium arsanilate, and 3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid-have been used as feed additives for disease control and for improvement of weight gain in swine and poultry for more than 50 years. The arsenic is present as As" " and is rapidly excreted present regulations require withdrawal of arsenical feed additives 5 days before slaughter for satisfactory depuration. Under these conditions, total arsenic residues inedible tissues do not exceed the maximum permissible limit of 2.0 mg/kg FW. Organoarseiucals probably will continue to be used as feed additives unless new evidence indicates otherwise. [Pg.42]
