The adsorption of some complexes on some substrates have been found to correlate with the changes in adhesion energy (Wa) [33]. For this study, the cationic surfactant dihydro-genated tallow dimethyl ammonium chloride (DHTDMAC) was complexed with four different anionic surfactants [i.e., sodium linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS), sodium alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS), sodium alkyl sulfate (AS), and sodium alkyl ethoxy sulfate (AES). The amount of cationic surfactant adsorbed on three different textiles was closely correlated to the work of adhesion (Wa). Figure 6 shows the correlation for different cationic surfactant particle sizes on polyester, nylon, and cellulose. The soil used in this study was a mineral oil (see Figure 1) manufactured by Squibb, which had a trace amount of an oil-soluble red dye added for visual acuity. The linear alkylben-zene sulfonate sodium salts (LAS) were homologously pure samples, each with a different linear alkyl carbon chain of 10, 11, 12, 13, or 14 carbon atoms. Each of the LAS samples was a mixture of isomers with phenyl attachment ranging in nearly equal amounts from 2 through 5, 6, or 7 (depending on the alkyl chain length). These LAS samples were made with an HF catalyst. 

The results are shown in Figure 27. It can be seen the all the anionics tested show significant effects of the combination with SAE on their sequestering ability. For this effect, the optimum EO mole number for each anionic is different. Since the combination of LAS with STPP gives a calcium ion sequestering ability of only 165 mg/g-detergents by this procedure, the combination of SAE with LAS(Linear Alkyl-benzene Sulfonate), AOS (4-Olefin Sulfonate), SAS(Secondary Alkane Sulfonate) or SDS (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate) would be recommended for use in heavy-duty detergents.

Flash rusting is the phenomenon of formation of small brown rust spots that appear very soon after application of waterbased systems directly to steel. The problem is more prominent when the steel surface is active (for example, after blasting) and the pH is <7. To combat this problem, flash-rust inhibitors are added to waterbased coatings. They should have good water solubility. Flat surfaces are relatively easy to protect, while weld areas are considered difficult. Flash-rust inhibition at a weld area can be achieved by a combination of different products. Flash-rust inhibitors are typically based on ammonium and sodium nitrites, benzoates, metaborates and phosphates, occasionally in combination with materials such as morpholine and amino methyl propanol. Some other organic salts are also used, such as amine salts of 2-mercaptobenzothiazolyl succinic acid and calcium or barium salts of linear alkyl naphthalene sulfonic acids. Typically they are used at levels of 0.1 to 1.0 % of the total mass of paint. They also help in preventing in-can corrosion upon storage of aqueous paint. 

The linear alkyl benzene sulfonates (LABS) are manufactured from alkyl benzene and the alkyl chain length can vary from Cg to C15 and their properties are mainly influenced by the average molecular weight and the spread of carbon number of the alkyl side chain. The CMC of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate is 5 x 10 mol dm (0.18%). The main disadvantages of LABS is their effect on the skin and hence they cannot be used in personal care formulations.
