Decyl alcohols

The catalytic hydrogenation of esters is of great commercial importance. It is one of the industrial methods used to produce long-chain fatty alcohols (eg, dodecyl and decyl alcohols) from fatty acid methyl esters (33). The method is also suitable for the conversion of dimethyl 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate [94-60-0] into 1,4-cydohexanedimethanol [105-08-8] an important intermediate in the manufacturing of polyesters. [Pg.389]

Until comparatively recently the bulk of general purpose phthaiate plasticisers have been based on the branched alcohols because of low cost of such raw material. Suitable linear alcohols at comparative prices have become available from petroleum refineries and good all-round plasticisers are produced with the additional advantage of conferring good low-temperature flexibility and high room temperature resistance to plasticised PVC compounds. A typical material (Pliabrac 810) is prepared from a blend of straight chain octyl and decyl alcohols. [Pg.331]

Undecylic Alcohol.—This alcohol, CH3(CH2)<,CH20H, may be described as of the same general characters as decylic alcohol, useful for the same purpose, but ving a slightly different modification to the bouquets. It occurs in Algerian Rue oil and in oil of Trawas. It boils at 231° to 233°. [Pg.107]

This alcohol is almost invariably present in those essential oils which contain aliphatic terpene alcohols, but in most of these it is present in very small amount, and it is only from ambrette seed oil that any quantity has been prepared. Ambrette seeds contain about 0-1 per cent, of this alcohol, which, when freed from decylic alcohol which is also present, has the following characters —... [Pg.124]
