The changes described above also allowed much easier access to the high voltage cable for routine (6-month) owner directed, service operations, and provided better upper and lower x-ray cabinet and control cabinet ventilation. With the exception of the x-ray tubes, all the individual manufactured components, on all four systems are identical. There are very subtle differences in the warm-up/start-up sequence on the x-ray controllers on the newer systems due to model/year and x-ray tube differences. The last three systems were supplied with environmental type key-boards for the image processors and base-mounted , rather than conduit-mounted exterior warning indicators. This unit is usually used as the reboiler for the distillation column and, in this service, operates by the thermosiphon action of the difference in static head in the column and in the vapor-liquid phase leaving the reboiler. When tied into the bottom chamber, the liquid is usually recirculated many times, vaporizing only 10-25% of the reboiler feed per pass however, when used as a draw-off from the bottom tray seal pan, the feed to the reboiler is not recirculated flow. Customer expectations for service operate at two levels—desired and adequate. In other words, there is the ideal of what customers expect and the level of service that will satisfy them. Ideally, one would expect every airline flight to arrive and depart precisely on time, the attendants be personally solicitous, and luggage never be lost or damaged. Realistically, the customer personally may find a 15-minute delay, a courteous attendant, and a rare problem with luggage to be acceptable. Any level of service in the gap between ideal and adequate service is characterized as a zone of tolerance. The zone of tolerance for acceptable service varies based on the specific service dimension. The zone of tolerance for reliability on the filling of a prescription is exceedingly narrow. More than likely there is no zone of tolerance on this dimension. Conversely, the zone of acceptance for the appearance of a pharmacy for many customers is probably quite wide. More than likely, once a minimum standard for cleanliness is met, the customer may care little about how the pharmacy looks (Parasuraman, Berry, and Zeithaml, 1991).

The batch reactor is extremely flexible compared with continuous reactor configurations. For example, temperature can easily be made a function of reaction time. Once the reactor is put into service, operational alternatives are still available. The tank can be operated halffull without affecting product quality, or the reaction time can be modified easily. Both of these changes may cause heat and mass transfer problems in fixed-volume continuous equipment. This flexibility is worthwhile for products that are made in various grades, have seasonal demand, or have subjective specifications such as the taste of beer.

The hardware and software IQ processes may be reasonably straightforward if the physical system is intended to be located on the same site and only used by that site. However, the introduction of centrally managed systems, shared service operations, and data warehouses as a means of lowering costs and providing a more streamlined infrastructure within an organization may make the overall validation activity for the site more complex.
