Structural changes in the group organization and adjustments of administrative functions were also made. For example, each division s software activities were bundled into a software center of competence that acts as an internal supplier to the divisions. This not only allows the company to be faster and more efficient in developing software, but it also provides tremendous benefits to customers as all MED products include software with a common look and feel. Small Corporate Center, Independent Shared Services... 

Our own research into best practice in this area does not surface one right answer, and given the vast differences between chemical companies, we would be very surprised if it did. Nevertheless, one organizational model seems to fit the needs of the chemical industry particularly well in our experience, this is an organization with global business divisions (i.e., product-based business units with worldwide control of all critically important business functions) as the main axle, guided by the corporate center and supported by shared services. About three quarters of the global players in chemicals have adopted this structure. 

With the global business unit set up, what, then, is the appropriate role and design for the corporate center and the shared services ... 

The hardware and software IQ processes may be reasonably straightforward if the physical system is intended to be located on the same site and only used by that site. However, the introduction of centrally managed systems, shared service operations, and data warehouses as a means of lowering costs and providing a more streamlined infrastructure within an organization may make the overall validation activity for the site more complex.

Corporate human resources should ensure conformity in standards across the businesses - for example, in employee evaluation processes, incentive plans, benefit plans, and training pohcies. As in other functions, aU operational tasks should be outsourced or operated as shared services at SBU level - for example, payroll, human resources information systems, a database on internal job opportunities, or the administration of benefit plans. The center should be active in developing top talent across the businesses, and it should run the goldfish pool for internal top talent and the company s program for recmiting experienced persoimel. This responsibility also includes the early identification of skills needed by the entire organization, for example, e-commerce skills to kick-start new businesses. The center must also act as a repository of expertise on internal and external best practices in talent management...

Outside of Dartmouth, the first provider of BASIC was the commercial time-sharing system operated by the General Electric Corporation. At first, in 1965, GEused Dartmouth BASIC virtually unchanged. It later added features different from the ones added at Dartmouth to meet the needs of their commercial customers. After 1969, GE BASIC and Dartmouth BASIC diverged. Other companies patterned commercial time-sharing services after GE s and almost always included some version of BASIC, but these second-generation versions of BASIC were patterned after GE s rather than Dartmouth s. 

The company evolved over the next two years. In 2006, 40 percent of GSK s total spend was tendered using electronic events. To speed adoption of the technology, the pharmaceutical company operates a shared service model run through a center of excellence to support more than 1,400 Internal customers using a hosted technology. 

We were fortunate in that we had tremendous administrative support to expand the program. Without that support, expanding the program to include a shared services program (really an independent service organization) would have been very difficult, if not impossible.
