Rotor dynamics

Many users consider rotaiy compressors, such as the Rootes -type blower, as turbomachines because their behavior in terms of the rotor dynamics is very close to centrifugal and axial flow machineiy. Unhke the reciprocating machines, the rotary machines do not have a veiy high vibration problem but, like the reciprocating machines, they are positive displacement machines. [Pg.928]

Improved rotor dynamic stability. The active magnetic bearing s ability to vary stiffness and damping permits rotation about the rotor s inertial axis, eliminating vibration and noise. [Pg.333]

Squeeze film dampers have long been used to combat rotor dynamic and stability problems that conventional bearings cannot solve on turbomachinery rotor systems. The use of squeeze film dampers in problem process machinery has tainted it as a treat-the-symptom solution, and many users shy away from using squeeze film dampers for this reason. Also, their limited use is explained by the difficulty in accurately predicting performance, particularly with o-ring supported dampers. [Pg.359]

Boyce, M.P., Morgan, E., and White, G., Simulation of Rotor Dynamics of High-Speed Rotating Machinery, Proceedings of the First International Conference in Centrifugal Compressor Technology, Madras, India, 1978, pp. 6-32. [Pg.583]

The balancing process must be in accord with the rotor dynamics, as specified by the operating environment. Unfortunately, the dynamic characteristics are often not properly recognized when the balancing procedure is specified. As a result, the unbalance distribution problem may not be identified not enough planes may be provided sensors may be located at nonoptimum positions, or critical speeds may be overlooked entirely. It is the responsibility of the machinery end user to satisfy himself that the manufacturer has considered ... [Pg.597]

Rotor speeds are such that dynamic balancing is required for proper vibration control. Also, while the critical speeds are generally above the operating speed, review of the rotor dynamics should not be ignored, jwi ticularly for the dry type. [Pg.116]

In those application where the cross-coupling effects from the oil seal were detrimental to the rotor dynamics, the use of the gas seal is a dis tinct advantage. However, the down side is that should the oil seal ha c provided a good measure of damping, the impact on the rotor dynamics is reversed. None of this is irreversible, but certainly must be kept m mind at the time of design. [Pg.216]

Bearings normally have a specified clearance range. Allowing clear ances to exceed the specified maximum clearance may encourage the onset of rotor dynamics problems. Dams in dam type bearings are very critical. The edge of the relief must be square and sharp, not rounded. The clearance of this bearing is also quite sensitive and must remain inside the specified limits for stability. [Pg.222]

Extra nozzles require a longer turbine shaft, which increases the span between bearings which can produce rotor dynamics problems. [Pg.284]

Figure 9-13). A response, of course, is a sudden rise in amplitude at a speed. The analysis is performed using a mathematical model that includes the effects of damping in the equations, making the model much more complex than any previous analysis. The University of Virginia carries out continuous research in which a consortium of users, vendors, and researchers provide funds, and data and interchange ideas to advance the science of rotor dynamics. Other organizations, such as the Bently Rotor Dynamics Research Corporation and Texas A M University, are also carrying on similar work on a continuing basis. Figure 9-13). On those compressors where rotor dynamics can be a problem, which is on all but the standard units (even them sometimes) and reciprocaiiiit compressors, this is the point where the acceptance of the compressor for vibration and critical speed criteria should take place. Finding these in the field later is what the user and vendor want to avoid, and this is why ail the elaborate and careful work is done at the running test time,... [Pg.410]

The determination of the first bending critical speed is well established however, there is also concern with regard to the rotor support system s sensitivity to exciting forces. These come from unbalance and/or gas dynamic forces arising during operation in service. Operation with dirty corrosive gas will soon cause rotor unbalance. The rotor dynamics verification test is concerned with synchronous excitaticm, namely unbalance. The test must also verify that the separation margins are to specification. [Pg.412]
