The use of the modelling-based strategy above described was investigated from an action research perspective by one of us (PF) who was the chemistiy teacher of a first grade medium level school class of 26 students (14-15 years old) in Brazil.

The economic values in the objective function are treated and structured from an operations research perspective as variables calculated bottom up considering underlying volume decision variables. Cross-disciplinary research approaches need to build on an understanding of how different methods relate to their research world , and what this means. For example, if laboratory research, field trials, crop rotation experiments and on-farm research are compared, they differ in complexity, and subsequently in the conditions for experimentation and control, and thereby for replications or reproductions of phenomena. They also differ with respect to the need for ethical considerations. Furthermore, systemic approaches that include, for example, the human and social parts of the agricultural systems into their research world are often perceived as less scientific than conventional, analytical approaches, which have delimited their research worlds to exclude those aspects of reality. However, these obviously different approaches are not different in their potential for doing good science. This recognition can serve as a basis for a reflexive discussion of the focus and meaning conveyed by different research perspectives and the strengths and weaknesses of different research methods in cross-disciplinary research approaches.

We do continually examine our portfolio of activities and determine what relates to the business from the advanced development, applied research perspective and from the very long-term research perspective. We need to have a mix of both, and we have a broad continuum of activity. In reality the spectrum of fundamental research to productization requires different modes of working at different stages—there is an evolution from what could perhaps be more individual blue-sky research to a team-based, problem-solving approach. To be successful, we need flexibility.

This work is a first approach to system reduction for biochemical systems. The research perspective is to apply system reduction to a large biochemical system, possibly using decomposition of the system into small subsystems or modules. Moreover, system reduction methods have to be developed which apply to nonlinear systems with state variables that remain positive when starting with positive initial concentrations, and produce systems with the same properties, which admit a biological interpretation.

Some evidence supports the idea that a manic or hypomanic episode may be induced in vulnerable patients by antidepressant medications (Goldberg and Truman, 2003). This phenomenon, known as the switch effect, has been clinically observed in many cases. Some data suggest that treatment with antidepressants, particularly those with dual action at both norepinephrine and serotonin, may precipitate a manic episode in bipolar patients (Stoner et al., 1999 Shuhnan et al., 2001 Yuksel et al., 2004). Though widely accepted from a clinical perspective, this phenomenon is still somewhat controversial from a research perspective.

In the present chapter we suggest the use of fish embryos as a powerful screening system that could be used to prioritize compounds for later testing using rodent or other mammalian models and clinical trials.
