Remedies ointments

The leaves are consumed by cows and sheep and even help to remedy the foot fungi they may suffer from. The leaves have also been made into an ointment for treating the skin of animals. Linnaeus said that the leaves were fatal to peacocks and turkeys and should not be consumed by horses and goats. 

The dried capitula of Matricaria chamomilla L. (Asteraceae), or German chamomile, have been used as anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic remedies since very early times on account of its contents in bisabolol oxides the activity of which has been experimentally substantiated. The plant is listed in several European pharmacopeias, and is used in the form of tinctures, extracts, lotions, ointments, shampoos, and sunscreen products. 

The use of Thera Wise bioactive natural therapeutic ointment, so-called Miracle oil obtained from Tamanu oil in the South Pacific has been reported.This ointment has been used as a skin healing remedy in the treatment of skin burns, eczema and can be used both for infants and adults. The wide range of the Thera Wise agents include the SHO Natural Skin Healing Ointment which has been reported to be an excellent alternative to corticosteroids, anti-itches and antibacterials, while the HmR Natural Hemorrhoidal Ointment has been reportedly used in the treatment of hemorrhoids and hemorrhoids associated with pregnancy. The Ac-f Natural Acne Ointment has been employed as a gentle, balanced supportive care for the treatment of acne. 

I attempted to rouse the system by wrapping the whole body, agreeably to Dr. Hume s practice, in blankets dipped in warm vinegar. To these remedies I added one more I rubbed the right side with mercurial ointment, with a view of exciting the actions of the vessels in the whole system through the medium of the liver . 

Monoterpenes, 10-carbon-containing terpenoids, are composed of two isoprene units, and found abundantly in plants, e.g. (+)-limonene from lemon oil, and (—)-linalool from rose oil. Many monoterpenes are the constituents of plant volatile oils or essential oils. These compounds are particularly important as flavouring agents in pharmaceutical, confectionery and perfume products. However, a number of monoterpenes show various types of bioactivity and are used in medicinal preparations. For example, camphor is used in liniments against rheumatic pain, menthol is used in ointments and liniments as a remedy against itching, bitter-orange peel is used as an aromatic bitter tonic and as a remedy for poor appetite and thymol and carvacrol are used in bactericidal preparations.

Elemi is occasionally used as a topical remedy in the form of an ointment, more particularly in ulcerous complaints of nn old and indolent nature. It is extensively employed for varnishes. 

The powdered or crushed fresh roots make a first-rate poultice, and the leaves also are used as a fomentation in inflammation. The addition of Slippery Elm powder improves the poultice, and the two remedies are frequently made up into an ointment for skin diseases, boils and ulcers. 

Used almost entirely (as the common name denotes) in the treatment of piles. The ounce to pint boiling water infusion is taken consistently in wineglass doses, and an ointment is made by macerating the herb in boiling lard for twenty-four hours. Probably the best of all known remedies for this complaint, the combination with Witch Hazel is found to be particularly effective. 

Eczema may be so mild that no treatment is required beyond avoiding known irritants and applying a soothing and protective ointment which keeps the skin moist and so reduces inflammation. There are many such over-the-counter remedies based on liquid paraffin and soft white paraffin, both of which are hydrocarbons obtained from refined petroleum and which contain nothing that can irritate the skin. Liquid paraffin is also called mineral oil and is available under a variety of trade names, such as Nujol, while soft white paraffin is better known as Vaseline. Emulsified mixtures of liquid paraffin and soft white paraffin make excellent skin creams. 

Ajowan seed has been popular from ancient times for its use in folk medicines. The seeds contain an essential oil with 50% thymol, which is a strong germicide, antispasmodic and fungicide. Thymol is also used in toothpaste and perfumery. It is used in a steeped liquid form against diarrhoea and flatulence. In India, the seeds are used as a household remedy for indigestion and colic and are used in poultices to relieve asthma and arthritis. Thymol isolated from the oil is a powerful antiseptic and an ingredient in a number of skin ointments/powders, deodorants, mouthwashes, toothpastes and gargles. 

Longstanding remedies such as Compound Benzoic Acid Ointment (Whitfield s ointment) are still acceptable for iruld infections but a topical imidazole (clotrimazole, econazole, miconazole, sulconazole), which is also effective against Candida, is now usually preferred. Tioconazole is effective topically for nail infections. If multiple areas are affected, especially if the scalp or nails are included, and if topical therapy fails, oral itraconazole or terbinafine are used. Griseofulvin has largely been superseded for these indications. 

Menthol is largely used as a flavoring or olfactory agent in a variety of products, including cigarettes, liqueurs, cough drops, mouthwashes, toothpastes, and shampoos. Menthol has been used in different medications to relieve symptoms of asthma and rhinitis and is a constituent of cold remedies and ointments designed to be rubbed on to the chest or applied around and even into the nostrils. Applied to the skin, it acts as a rubefacient and counter-irritant, but substantial concentrations of volatile oil can be inhaled from the skin. 

When a chemical blepharoplasty is performed without occlusion, the increased depth of action of the phenol sometimes translates into a persistent moist scab in the inside corner of the upper eyelid (Figure 36.16), where the phenol has macerated more intensely. Applying an antibiotic cream or ointment remedies the problem, and it should resolve before the 15th day. There are no sequelae from this slow healing. If the scab persists for more than 2 weeks, the doctor should remain alert and monitor the patient more closely. 

Native to Central Asia, the flowering tops, berries contain flavonoids, tannins, a bitter compound called juniperin, and volatile oil. Leaves, and seeds are biochemically active. An ointment made from the seed was a folk remedy for cancerous ulcers, and a decoction of the root was thought to heal hard tumors. The active narcotic ingredients are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabinol, and cannabidiol. Also known as Indian hemp, rtmrijuana, hashish. 

Stavesacre Ointment. Melt together 1 ounce powdered stavesacre (staphis-agria), and 3 ounces lard digest fer 3 or 4 hours, and strain. A cleanly remedy for itch, and for destroying body vermin. 

Tar Ointment. Tar and mutton suet, e al parts melt together, and stir till cold. This is an excellent remedy for scald-head and ringworm. 

Allison s Acetated Ointment of Tobacco. Tobacco leaves, sliced, 10ounces cider vinegar (or officinal dilute acetic acid), 4 pints basilicon ointment see No. 4964), 13 ounces. Boil the tobacco in vinegar to 1 pint, strain, reduco in a water-bath to"6 fluid ounces, and add this fluid extract to the melted ointment, stirring constantly till it is cool. A flue remedy for gathered breasts. 

Fatty oils and fat-like substances - Fats and oils are esters of glycerin and higher fatty adds. In pure form, oils (castor, sea-buckthom and others) are used as remedies or as solvents for pharmaceutical substances. Fatty oils are used in medicine to make ointments, liniments and emollients, and for skin care and therapeutic massage. Some oils have therapeutic action. For example castor oil is used as a puigative and sea-buckthom is used internally to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers and externally for skin bums. Plant waxes, sterols and other substances are fat-like substances. Some of them are used in medidnal preparations. Unsaturated fatty acids (oleic, linoleic, linolenic, palmitic and other acids) prevent development of atherosclerosis. They are contained in plant seeds (almond, sunflower, flax and others), and fruits (olives and sea-buckthom). 

Traditional use A decoction of the flowers is used to treat chest aches, neurasthenia, and asthma, and is used as a laxative, febrifuge, and cough remedy as well. An ointment, prepared by boiling the roots in cow fat, is used as hemostatic and to heal wounds (Khalmatov 1964). In Iraq, a decoction of the flowers is used as a sedative, analgesic, sudorific, and diuretic (Al-douri 2000). 

Important Treatment Modalities. Common ways of dealing with dermatological problems are topical treatments (such as ointments and creams) and oral treatments (drugs taken by mouth). Any bodily injury, irritation, or trauma that eliminates water, lipids, or protein from the epidermis compromises its function. Restoration of the normal epidermal barrier can often be accomplished using mild soaps and emollient creams or lotions. The often-cited dermatologic adage is If it is dry, wet it if it is wet, dry it. Consequently, wet compresses are a frequendy used remedy. A multitude of other topical treatments are available, from antibiotic, antiviral, or steroid ointments applied to treat infectious diseases or eczema to vitamin D derivative creams for psoriasis and retinoid creams for acne. Drugs can also be taken orally to treat a variety of conditions such as acne and autoimmune disorders.
