Benzoic acid ointment, compound

Compound Benzoic acid Ointment (For Salicylic acid) 2-5 g Starch solution Each ml of 0.1 N bromine = 0.002302 g Of CyHgOj... [Pg.216]

Longstanding remedies such as Compound Benzoic Acid Ointment (Whitfield s ointment) are still acceptable for iruld infections but a topical imidazole (clotrimazole, econazole, miconazole, sulconazole), which is also effective against Candida, is now usually preferred. Tioconazole is effective topically for nail infections. If multiple areas are affected, especially if the scalp or nails are included, and if topical therapy fails, oral itraconazole or terbinafine are used. Griseofulvin has largely been superseded for these indications. [Pg.263]

Many cosmetics, paints, ointments, foods, shampoos, and medicines contain preservatives to combat biological degradation. Toxic chemicals used as preservatives include mercury compounds, formaldehyde, methyl and propyl p-aminobenzoic acids, butylated hydroxyanisol, butylated hydroxytoluene, benzoic acid, and quaternary ammonium compounds. 32 ... [Pg.88]

In this method salicylic acid is determined in its compound preparations. A sample of 1 g of ointment or 1 ml of liquid preparation, containing 6% of salicylic acid and 12% of benzoic acid is dissolved in boiling water. The cooled solution is diluted to 500 ml with H20 and filtered, and a 100 ml portion of the titrate is diluted to 100 ml with H20. Salicylic acid is determined in the resulting solution by differential spectrophotometry at 297 nm (22). [Pg.449]

Older Compounds. Some antimycotics have been used for a long time- Whitfield s ointment is a typical example (1907). The ointment usually contains 6% benzoic acid [65-85-0], C7H602, and 3% salicylic acid [69-72-7], C II () The action is attributed to the keratolytic effect of the salicylic acid and the direct effect of benzoic acid on the fungus. [Pg.250]

There are a number of nonspecific topical drugs, some some of which have been in use for most of this century. Early therapy of superficial mycoses utilized topical fungicides such as salicylic acid, salicylanilide, iodine tincture, and even weak fungistatic compounds such as benzoic acid. Salicylic acid is mainly a keratolytic agent that also removes the softened, loosened infected epithelial layers. In combination with benzoic acid (Whitfield s ointment), it has been a useful product for years. [Pg.298]

Compound Ointment of Benzoic Acid, B.P.C. Contains 6 per cent of benzoic acid and 3 per cent of salicyclic acid in a mixture of emulsifying wax and paraffins. [Pg.124]

The bromine process is particularly useful in the presence of benzoic acid (r/. Compound Ointment of Benzoic Acid) which does not react with bromine. According to Kolthoff the precipitate of tribromophenol may be filtered off and the benzoic acid isolated from the filtrate. [Pg.558]
