Remediation Cleaning up contaminated water, soils, or sediments, and restoring a site to an environmentally acceptable condition.

The petroleum and the polymer products we find indispensable are two of the many industries that depend on carbon chemistry. Cold remedies, cleaning products, nutrients for space travel, convenience foods, and countless drugs, both legal and illegal, have all come about from our understanding of the chemistry of carbon. 

In March, 2000, a thunderstorm struck the Philips semiconductor plant at Albuquerque in New Mexico, which made silicon chips for products like cellphones. Damage at first seemed minor, and fire fighters soon left the premises. At first. Philips told major customers like Nokia and Ericsson that the delay to production would only be one week. But damage to some of the clean areas in the plant - created by smoke and water - was actually going to take months to remedy. Clean rooms in semiconductor plants must be spotless, and particles of more than 0.5g are filtered out. 

As the economic value of coproducts has decreased, it has become more difficult to provide capital for environmental controls on air emissions and wastewater streams such as toxic phenoHc effluents from chemical recovery operations. Some former coke and manufactured gas sites may require remediation to clean up contaminated soil and groundwater. These difficulties will force the shutdown of some operations and discourage recovery of coproducts in future installations. 

The possible remedial and preventive actions are hot soaks and drains during cooldown to help remove soluble deposited material, chemical cleaning to remove corrosion products and reduce the pressure drop (see Metal surface treatments), and reduced corrosion product transport into OTSG using amines other than ammonia in feedwater (14). 

Title II of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 is related mainly to vehicles that operate on roads and highways. Off-road, or nonroad, engines and vehicles used for site drilling, remediation, or related construction may be regulated if the administrator of EPA determines that some degree of emission reduction is necessary.

Personnel and equipment need to be decontaminated in the CRZ. However, the CRZ might be a small area immediately adjacent to the remediation area, which workers are aware of, and is also marked appropriately. Although the CRZ is less formal and likely does not have many decontamination stations, efforts should be made to make sure that personnel and equipment are appropriately cleaned. Many times, due to the logistics of a smaller job, disposal of wastes becomes difficult. If purge water is drummed and left on the site, it is imperative that it is identified, labeled properly, recorded in the site log, and disposed of in the proper manner (in accordance with applicable, local, state, federal, or other regulations).

In the past the presence of hazardous substances in soils was not a major public concern. In spite of the large number of documented hazardous waste sites in the United States, relatively few sites liave been cleaned up widi specific redevelopment in mind. Remedial actions usually are undertaken to contain or remove chemical contaminants little or no consideration is given to the ultimate use of the site. If land reuse is decided before the cleanup there may be an opportunity to tailor the cleanup acti ities to best suit the site rcde elopment.
