Some hopes were raised last year when President Carter requested a Cabinet-Level Coordinating Committee to undertake a Domestic Policy Review of Industrial Innovation. Industry, labor, and public Interest groups participated In Task Forces charged with developing recommendations for public policies to stimulate Innovation. These were presented nine months ago and since then federal agencies have debated their merits and have brought their own recommendations forward. The action now... [Pg.223]

Mitouard, on 12 December 1772, read a paper to the Academy on the residue in the retort in the preparation of phosphorus, which was reported on by Macquer and Lavoisier on 16 December. When it was received is not stated. It was recommended for publication in the Memoires. . . divers Savants but as far as I can find it was not published, and all we know of it is contained in the report. The material was rich in phosphorus, since it inflamed in air, and when burnt in an apparatus which Mitouard described, and with precautions which he describes , it gave more than its weight of phosphoric acid, even when this was concentrated by evaporation. He had described (as Lavoisier was later to do) a simple preparation of phosphoric acid from phosphorus by combining it with the base of nitre (presumably nitric acid). He also discovered what must have been red phosphorus, regarding it as phosphorus itself combined with a portion of white earth . The increase in weight Mitouard attributed to the humidity of the air or to the air itself contained in the vessels in which the combustion was made . [Pg.205]

The NRC report (37) concludes with several recommendations for public participation that are common to any decision making process in waste cleanup. They specifically include that when MNA is being considered as part of the remedial action it is imperative that the environmental agencies and responsible... [Pg.55]

Many chemical companies also place into the technical service function the responsibiHty for the generation of a wide variety of printed materials containing customer-oriented information. These may range from a simple one-page technical specification handout to lengthy publications on appHcation tips and recommendations for a broad range of uses (14). The sales value of such materials, when weU prepared, is quite high. Most firms provide such... [Pg.378]

These three elements were first made during a 15-month period of intense activity from late 1994 to early 1996 at GSI, Darmstadt. They therefore post-date the deliberations of the lUPAC/IUPAP international working group, but the publications convincingly meet the stringent criteria for discovery elaborated by that group and have been widely accepted by the scientific community. So far, no names have been officially proposed or recommended for elements 110-112. [Pg.1283]

Many of the building codes used initially in North America were imported from Europe by the early settlers. In 1630, the City of Boston building code stated No man shall build his chimney with wood nor cover his roof with thatch. In 1865, the City of New Orleans adopted an ordinance requiring the inspection of buildings for public use. In 1905 the National Board of Fire Undeiwriters published the first national building code in the United States, the Recommended National Building Code. [Pg.198]

Calculation of condensate piping by two-phase flow techniques is recommended however, the tedious work per line can often be reduced by using empirical methods and charts. Some of the best are proprietary and not available for publication however, the Sarco method [42] has been used and found to be acceptable, provided no line less than VA" is used regardless of the chart reading. Under some circumstances, w hich are too random to properly describe, the Sarco method may give results too small by possibly a half pipe size. Therefore, latitude is recommended in selecting either the flow rates or the pipe size. [Pg.135]

Other notaries are the Consensus on Operating Practices for the Control of Feedwater and Boiler Water Chemistry in Modem Industrial Boilers (1994 edition), published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and BS 2486 1997 Recommendations for Treatment of Water for Steam Boilers and Water Heaters from the British Standards Institution. The 1994 Consensus (with its engineering background) and the 1997 version of BS 2486 (with its strength in operational chemistry) complement each other well. I consider that the tables and propositions contained in these two booklets jointly represent a true standard for boiler water treatment operational control. Consequently, I am pleased to be able to reproduce in this book all the tables from both publications, having received permission from the respective organizations to do so. [Pg.1001]

It is the intent of this chapter to introduce the analyst to some of the more common procedures that have been established for sample preparation. It is impossible to cover such a subject comprehensively in a single chapter and it will still be necessary for the analyst to seek support from the literature when faced with unusual samples. Fortunately, analytical LC methods have been reported in the literature for over two decades and it is highly likely that a publication exists describing a particular analysis of interest or one very similar to it. The journals that are recommended for reference are the Journal of Liquid Chromatography, the Journal of Chromatography, the Journal of Chromatographic Science, The Analyst and Analytical Chemistry. [Pg.195]

Recommendations provide valuable guidelines to protect public health but cannot be enforced by law. Federal organizations that develop recommendations for toxic substances include the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). [Pg.19]

As of 1995, almost 38% of all women 50 to 75 years of age were using HRT.1 It was in 1996 that the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) first published its recommendations that not all postmenopausal women should be prescribed HRT, but rather, therapy should be individualized based on risk factors. This recommendation was further supported with publication of the Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study (HERS) in 1998, which demonstrated that women who had established CHD were at an increased risk of experiencing a myocardial infarction within the first year of HRT use compared with a similar group of women without CHD risk factors. As a result, the authors concluded that HRT is not recommended for the secondary prevention of CHD.2 Then, in 2002, the Women s Health Initiative (WHI) report was published. This trial demonstrated that HRT was not protective against CHD but... [Pg.766]

The development and widespread use of vaccines is one of the greatest public health achievements of the twentieth century. Other than safe drinking water, no other modality has had a greater impact on reducing mortality from infectious diseases. The first accounts of deliberate inoculation to prevent disease date back as far as the tenth century. However it wasn t until 1798 that Edward Jenner published his work on inoculation of natural cowpox as a means to prevent infection with smallpox. This was the first scientific attempt to prevent infection by inoculation. Since 1900, vaccines have been developed against more than 20 diseases, with half of these recommended for... [Pg.1239]
