Water heater

Whenever unvented combustion occurs iadoors or when venting systems attached to combustion units malfunction, a variety of combustion products win be released to the iadoor environment. Iadoor combustioa units include nonelectric stoves and ovens, furnaces, hot water heaters, space heaters, and wood-burning fireplaces or stoves. Products of combustion include CO, NO, NO2, fine particles, aldehydes, polynuclear aromatics, and other organic compounds. Especially dangerous sources are unvented gas and kerosene [8008-20-6] space heaters which discharge pollutants directly into the living space. The best way to prevent the accumulation of combustion products indoors is to make sure all units are properly vented and properly maintained. [Pg.381]

Medical uses for Udel resin include surgical trays, nebulizers, flow controllers for blood, and respiration regulators. Transportation applications center around automotive fuse housings, electrical connectors, and switches. Electrical and electronic end uses include coil bobbins, housings, connectors, bushings, capacitor film, and business machine parts. EinaHy, water, heater dip tubes, milking machine parts, pollution control equipment, and some filtration membranes are made. [Pg.272]

On/Off Control An on/off controller is used for manipulated variables having only two states. They commonly control temperatures in homes, electric water-heaters and refrigerators, and pressure and liquid level in pumped storage systems. On7off control is satisfac-toiy where slow cychng is acceptable because it always leads to cycling when the load hes between the two states of the manipulated variable. The cycle will be positioned symmetrically about the set point only if the normal value of the load is equidistant between the two states of the manipulated variable. The period of the symmetrical cycle will be approximately 40, where 0 is the deadtime in the loop. If the load is not centered between the states of the manipulated variable, the period will tend to increase, and the cycle follows a sawtooth pattern. [Pg.726]

Applications The common Heliflow apphcations are tank-vent condensers, sample coolers, pump-seal coolers, and steam-jet vacuum condensers. Instant water heaters, glycoLwater seivdces, and cryogenic vaporizers use the spiral tube s ability to reduce thermally induced stresses caused in these apphcations. [Pg.1086]

Enamels have very varied properties where their chemical stability is concerned. Relevant stability testing must be carried out for the different areas of application. Enamel coatings for hot water heaters, their requirements and combination with cathodic protection are described in Section 20.4.1. [Pg.175]

The action of different balancing resistors can be seen in Fig. 20-11. The enamelled water heater had an electrically isolated heating element of stainless steel with a 2.5 m surface area. With R = 600 Q, the tank can no longer be cathodically protected at / = 800 D, on the other hand, all is well [13]. The potential of the... [Pg.455]

Nonuniform corrosion or pitting corrosion frequently occurs on steel structures in seawater and in soil. Nonuniform and pitting corrosion easily lead to damage in tanks, pipelines, water heaters, ships, buoys and pontoons, because these structures lose their functional efficiency when their walls are perforated (see Chapter 4). [Pg.491]

One of the reasons why it is important to remove suspended solids in water is that the particles can act as a source of food and housing for bacteria. Not only does this make microbiological control much harder but, high bacteria levels increase the fouling of distribution lines and especially heat transfer equipment that receive processed waters (for example, in one s household hot water heater). The removal of suspended contaminants enables chemical treatments to be at their primary jobs of scale and corrosion prevention and microbial control. [Pg.243]

After heater An air or water heater positioned in a long duct or pipe work run to remedy distribution heat losses. [Pg.1406]

Accidents have occurred because hot water was not treated with respect. Five men were killed when a plastic hot-water tank split along a seam [14J. On another plant, a man, about to make some tea, caught his sleeve on the tap of an electric water heater. The heater fell over, 2 gal of hot water fell on him, and he died in the hospital five days later [15]. The heater should have been fixed to the wall. If it had contained a hazardous chemical, it would have been secured, but no one thought hot water was hazardous. Chemicals are not the only hazards on a plant. [Pg.248]

Unvented kerosene and gas space heaters leaking chimneys and furnaces back-drafting from furnaces, gas water heaters, woodstoves, and fireplaces automobile exhaust from attached garages environmental tobacco smoke. Humans are normally the main indoor source of carbon dioxide. Unvented or imperfectly vented combustion appliances can also increase indoor COj concentrations. [Pg.56]

Refrigerators declined in efficiency following World War II due, apparently, to the substitution of lower-cost, lower-efficiency motors with improved thermal insulation to protect them from waste heat generation, and there is some evidence that water heater efficiency declined between the end of World War II and 1975, and that industrial dry-type transformers declined in efficiency between 1970 and 1993. [Pg.76]

But an ideological shift in Congress disrupted this process. In the 104th Congress, industrial opponents of appliance efficiency standards found sympathetic support, and passed a one-year moratorium on appliance efficiency standards in 1995. The moratorium held back DOE efforts on appliance standards for nearly two years. The refrigerator standard that was to be issued early in 1995 was delayed until 1997, and the effectiveness date set hack three years until 2001. Progress toward new standards on ballasts, water heaters, air conditioners, clothes washers, and other products was delayed. [Pg.80]

A macro supply curve of conserved electricity tor the U.S. residential sector. Key assumptions are given inside the chart. This supply curve shows estimated savings potentials from 304 different measures. The associated table describing the measures is too long to present here, but certain measures with numbers on top of them are noteworthy from a policy perspective. For example, measure 80 is conversion from conventional water heaters to heat pump water heaters. [Pg.290]

Furnaces and boilers sold today must by law have annual fuel utilization efficiency of at least 78 to 80 percent. Gas water heaters operating this way as space heaters are equivalent to the efficiency of pre-1992 furnaces and boilers which had space heating efficiencies typically in the mid-60 percent range. However, the combined efficiency for space and... [Pg.540]

The U.S. Department ofEnergy develops test procedures for efficiency measurements and sets minimum efficiency standards for furnaces, boilers, and water heaters. Information on energy efficiency of buildings and equipment is available from the DOE. [Pg.542]

In subsequent years, Savery made important improvements that benefited future steam inventions. In June 1699 he demonstrated to the Royal Society a pump with two receivers, each with a separate, hand-controlled steam supply. This ensured improved continuity of operation, allowing one receiver tn operate in its vacuum stage and the other under steam pressure. In 1701, he added two more critical steps a second boiler, avoiding the need to shut down the fire and pump, between stages and he replaced the two interconnected steam cocks with a single valve, run with a manually operated long lever. This may have been the inspiration for the modern slide valve and his inventiveness created, in effect, the world s first feed-water heater. [Pg.1027]

Many further solar energy developments and demonstrations took place m the first half of the twentieth century. However, only one solar technology survived the commercial competition with cheap fossil fuels. That exception was solar water heaters that were widely used in Japan, Israel, Australia and Florida, where electricity was expensive and before low-cost natural gas became available. [Pg.1052]

Use of solar panels or photovoltaics (PVs) is another popular way to generate solar electricity. The space program is perhaps the most recognized user of PVs and is responsible for most of the advancements in PVs. Many people are familiar with PVs through small applications such as calculators and perhaps solar water heaters, but early forays in PV experimentation were little more than noted side observations in non-PV experiments. [Pg.1065]
