Polyvinyl acetal adhesives

An emulsion polymer-isocyanate adhesive, a crosslinked polyvinyl acetate adhesive, a resorcinol-formaldehyde adhesive, a phenol-resorcinol-formalde-hyde adhesive, and an acid-catalyzed phenolic-formaldehyde adhesive developed bonds of high shear strength and wood failure at all levels of acetylation in the dry condition. A neoprene contact bond adhesive and a moisture-curing polyurethane hot-melt adhesive performed as well on acetylated wood as untreated wood in tests of dry strength. Emulsion-polymer isocyanates (EPI s) were introduced by Ashland Chemical Co. as better performing wood adhesives (101). EPI s are equivalent to phenol-resorcinol and cross-linkable polyvinyl acetate adhesives. EPI s are more advantageous than others because they have shorter press times, no chalking temperature, a low-temperature curing, no formaldehyde emission, better resistance to high temperatures and accelerated aging, environmental attractiveness, an ability to determine performance by adjusting hardener level, and more tolerance to variations in process conditions.

Dried polyvinyl acetate adhesive films are highly resistant to attack by microorganisms. The addition of biocides will prevent attack of microorganisms on a liquid emulsion or on a dried adhesive film when animal or vegetable modifying ingredients have been added to the emulsion. 

Polyvinyl acetate adhesives have a low degree of toxicity and have been used in food packaging for decades. They have been approved for this use by the Food and Drug Administration. 

Thickeners that can be added to all homopolymer and copolymer polyvinyl acetate adhesive emulsions include those shown in Table 10.

In polyvinyl acetate adhesives, Uniplex 108 s good grease resistance and flexibility develops good tack for joining difficult surfaces, such as metal to rubber. In hot melts, Uniplex 108 improves flexibility for formulating book bindings and shoe adhesives. 

Also useful in aqueous eaulsion systens sucb as caulks and polyvinyl acetate adhesives. Uniplex 400 nay be used to formulate adhesives that need to provide good adhesion betwera porous and polyolefin surfaces. In caulk formulations, the sane excellent performance of other benzoate plasticizers can be elected in addition to providing lower volatility.
