Emulsion polymerization is the basis of many industrial processes, and the production volume of latex technologies is continually expanding—a consequence of the many environmental, economic, health, and safety benefits the process has over solvent-based processes. A wide range of products are synthesized by emulsion polymerization, including commodity polymers, such as polystyrene, poly(acrylates), poly (methyl methacrylate), neoprene or poly(chloroprene), poly(tetrafluoroethylene), and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The applications include manufacture of coatings, paints, adhesives, synthetic leather, paper coatings, wet suits, natural rubber substitutes, supports for latex-based antibody diagnostic kits, etc. ... [Pg.863]

When bonding compounded rubber to fabric, for the manufacture of fabric reinforced expansion joints in the chemical plant piping systems, mechanical anchoring between cotton/Nylon/fibre and compounded rubber should be sufficient to ensure good adhesion. Synthetic fibres require treatment with chemical coatings to secure maximum adhesion and bond [8, 9]. [Pg.87]

The resulting solutions are frequently used for processing spandex fibres, coatings, adhesives, synthetic leathers etc. [Pg.546]

Wood panel adhesives predominantly, or even exclusively, composed of natural materials already exist. Some of these have now been in commercial/industrial use in a few countries for a rather long time. Among these it is sufficient to briefly mention tannin adhesives [1-3], commercial since the early 1970s, variations on tannin/lignin adhesives that are coming to the market at present [4, 5], some types of lignin adhesives [6-9] and different adhesives based on soy protein flour and hydrolysates [10-13] also on the way to early industrialisation. In all these adhesives, synthetic polymers are present in very small amounts or are totally absent. [Pg.365]

Another way to classify polymers results from the consideration of their typical applications. Typical classes are Compression molding compounds, injection molding compounds, semi-finished products, films, fibers, foams (urethane foam, styrofoam), adhesives (synthetic adhesives are based on elastomers, thermoplastics, emulsions, and thermosets. Examples of thermosetting adhesives are Epoxy, polyurethane, cyanoacrylate, acrylic polymers), coatings, membranes, ion exchangers, resins (polyester resin, epoxy resin, vinylether resin), thermosets (polymer material that irreversibly cures), elastomers (BR, silicon rubber). [Pg.30]

Poly(vlnyl esters) are one of the most important groups of raw materials for adhesives. Poly(vinyl acetates) are important in solvent adhesives. Synthetic resin emulsions, based on poly(vinyl esters) with a solids content of 50-70% are the principal raw materials for emulsion-based adhesives. [Pg.12]

Solvent cementing is usually used for polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Because plasticizer migration from vinyls to the adhesive bond line can cause problems, adhesives selected must be tested for their compatibility with the plasticizer. Nitrile rubber adhesives are particularly good in this respect, although polyurethanes and neoprenes are also useful. 3M Company s Scotch-Grip 2262 adhesive (synthetic resin in solvent) is claimed to be exceptionally resistant to plasticizer migration in vinyls. [Pg.174]
